Toni, I am a newbie at gardening. Here is the background on my second experiment. I bought 4 flat stems (leaves) from ebay on Dec 20 2010. It arrived 3 days later. I planted the four leaves into a plastic pot (recycled from Texas Sage plant that is planted into the ground). I used MG potting soil mix (what I had left over from my first experiment with calla lily). About a week past, I decided to cut the four stems into halves. I then planted the four top halves into another recycled plastic pot. I did not wait for the cut to dry. This time I used left over MG Topsoil. The picture is of the four top halves. It was taken today, Jan. 24, 2010. http://www.flickr.com/photos/58777876@N08/5383357419/ I pulled one of the halves out of the soil and I saw a root ball about 1 cm long. No sign of rot. I was worried because I did not let the cut dry before planting. One of the halves has two new growth. The first pot shows no sign of growth. The plant is located on the floor of a room that has a south window. It gets direct afternoon sunlight about 2 hours a day. The rest is reflected sunlight off wall and floor. Interesting Kasie. It could be. The bloom development does look different than most of what I've been able to find on Celadine. This one is a uniform yellowish-green, while the Celadines seem to have some slight red that accounts for the faint pink on the backside of the flowers when they open. I just thought it might be a variation in Celadine but I am certaily the novice when it comes to identification. Teri, each of the two plants show in the last 2 pictures are single plants that branch right at the soil surface. I just bought both of them this way because they had blooms on them, so I can't explain why they are this way or take any credit for how they look! I can only hope to keep them alive and healthy from here out. I have started them on fertilizer and my plan is to leave them in their current pots the rest of this season. I live just north of Dallas,Texas. I have several other rooted cuttings that range from 1 to 2 years in age. Research other posts here about branching but from what I understand, the best way to promote branching is to take cuttings. The cutting itself can be rooted, while the cut end of your plant will dry and no longer grow, but new growth tips will form and start to grow from below the cut. I have some plants with three branches growing out below previously cut ends. Good luck! Kevin

AAAARRGGGHHH! I`ll wear me pirate hat matey soes ye can recognize me. Went to Emersons yesterday, he has ropes hanging from the ceiling to tie and haul the plumeria up. They cut the leaves off EVERY SINGLE plant! Haul up the big ones then pack in the smaller ones, shut the garage and don`t open it till spring. He said he loses some of the small ones every year if it gets to freezing as the garage is unheated. When he was working and in town year round he left them in the ground. He told me you do sacrifice by bare rooting them. Those grown in pots year round or the ground do much better because they don`t have to use all that energy to form new roots, plus you lose a lot of old roots when digging them up. Tally HO!

If it's going into an attached garage, just throw it out there. You'll find elaborate instructions for getting plants ready to change circumstances, but I've never had anything bothered by moving that isn't a ficus. Plants go in, out, into below freezing temperatures, into hot, dry houses - they don't care. Now the coldest my garage ever gets, is low 20's F. And that's with -20°F and serious wind chill. Below freezing is relatively normal, but it has a hard time getting much colder than that. The roses in the garage have started to leaf out. I need to start watching them, and get them outside fairly soon. My current problem is that there isn't anywhere to put them that isn't covered with snow and isn't in the direct path of cars. I have to at least find the back walk before they can come out. During the spring, they do a fair amount of moving in and out depending on the weather. Our current forecast is for above freezing temperature until Wednesday night, so they could definitely go out for a couple of days. If the forecast low is below around 28°F, or I have reason to believe it is going to get colder than that, they have to get moved back in for the night. If a cold spell comes, and they have to spend a couple of days inside, they just have to. The strange thing, at least IMHO, is that while they start growing so much earlier than the in the ground roses, they don't tend to start blooming that much earlier. Mutabilis has a very hard time beating R. hugonis, and it should be working with a several week head start. There is a definite learning curve with this.
