Baking Soda

I'd posted this before as a question to Holly but haven't seen a response. What does the baking soda/water mixture do? I've never heard of using that before. By reading the post where it's mentioned it sounds like it acts as some sort of fungicide. If anyone else knows about this please respond. Thanks,

Both products make baked goods rise...produce gas within and make the cake or whatever rise...theya re leavening agents. Baking soda is bicarbonate of soda and will produce gas in the presence of an acid, like brown sugar, molasses, honey, chocolate, sour cream, butter milk, lemon juice etc. Baking powder is bicarbonate of soda and alnother chemical like sodium aluminum sulfate, and a calcium salt, that produces gas in the presence of a liquid and again when heated. When mixed with a liquid, the acid of the sulfate combines with the sodium bi carb and produces a rise...and the other ingredient reacts with heat and produces another rise. That's why baking powder loses it's ability to leaven when exposed to moisture... Linda C

@Crystalannj Johnson, I honestly do not understand where this internet misinformation came from but Vinegar does not remove stains, or improve the performance of a Soaking or Wash Solution. I will say, it will remove certain rust stains, but beyond that, you are neutralizing Detergent instead of increasing performance by adding it. Baking Soda, on the other hand does improve performance, but it's so minimal it's not really worth adding. Borax would be a much stronger additive and better product, if someone was trying to remove Odors. Lastly, mixing Baking Soda & Vinegar doesn't accomplish literally anything. You are just watching the effects of two chemical agents, neutralize each other. If you were going to do this again, I would suggest just using the Persil Alone, or adding something like OxiClean or Biz Laundry Booster instead of Baking Soda. And whatever you do, do not Soak Clothes in Chlorine Bleach for extended periods of time.

Baking soda requires an acid to rise, as well as moisture. Baking powder has its own acid. Double acting has two acidic components--one that is activated by liquid and the other which is activated by heat. Things that rise with just baking soda: Buttermilk biscuits or pancakes (buttermilk is acidic). Molasses cookies (or even cookies with brown sugar). Vinegar cake. Baking powder has cream of tartar (acidic) or other acidic chemical and baking soda, Double acting has two different acids one for each action, unless it has monocalcium phosphate which reacts immediately to the liquid, and is changed to a form which reacts to the heat (or something like that--Lindac's the chemist). Other double acting baking powders have an aluminum component, which some people don't care for. You can make your own baking powder if you have baking soda and cream of tartar, especially if they're fairly fresh (sometimes that 20 year old can that some people have is discharged). That's one part soda to two parts CoT. If you really know your baking chemistry, you can use soda with other kitchen acid, but if you don't you can wreck your recipe.

I saw and read that article too and now I dont know where I referenced it from. Was it, maybe, someone here posted a link? Dont remember. Gonna' try baking soda like that. I will tell you that a pinch of baking soda will sweeten up your tomato sauce without one grain of sugar being added. I never add sugar to tomato sauce. It wil also add cleaning strength to your dish washing tub if you have hard water. It will make it sudsy and bubbly and it will clean better. A pinch in the pot of boiling water will also keep the bright green color in your green beans as you cook them.

To control plumeria rust try these two remedys:
mix 1 tablespoon baking powder in 1/2 quart lukewarm water
tilt the pot so liquid does not drench soil
spray all leaf and stem surfaces
let drip and then stand pot upright to dry
Follow next with remedy #2
mix 4 tablespoons cider vinegar in 1/2 quart lukewarm water

Now the ph level is changed to the detriment of rust
Living environment and life cycle of rust is disrupted

Rust spores travel via ants, bees and wind
Spraying under leaves with low ph water or even ph neutral water at weekly intervals keeps spores from attaching.

Organic farmers keep their trees healthy with regular dustings using common road dust (fine soil dust) on under-surfaces of leaves. Bugs and air borne funguses? hate dust and look elsewhere for a home.

Hello John, Thank you for the information on road dust preventing rust - It confirms the reason that the best roses are grown in inner towns and do not suffer from rose rust due to the passing traffic stirring up the dust but roses grown in the rural areas are very prone to all fungal attacks. I didn't know the organic farmers deliberately used that dusting method. Amazing!

Thanks John. I'll have to keep that in mind if I ever end up with rust. I wonder if it would work on some of my other plants that are prone to fungal attacks. I refuse to grow roses here because of Black Spot and Powdery Mildew, ick!

It probably has the same effect on plants. Good thing we're not baking a cake though. lol
