Propagation of Hibiscus

Does anyone have tips for hibiscus? Being brand new at this, not sure if cutting is the right approach, or even when the best time would be.

Any tips are appreciated.

i moved one last month,a few tips broke in the move.i just dipped in rooting hormine and stuck in a pot,put it in the shade check the soil for watering,and the they're gtowing.never even lost a leaf.good luck.patricia

i took clippings from my mil and brought them home, dipped in rooting horomone, and into the soil they went, i misted them, and kept the soil watered like you do regularly. now i have roots. i am so happy!! LOL i kept them on the front porch which is bright shade, it gets late sun. so its like maybe 2 hours? ~Medo

Previously known as Hibiscus huegelii, now Alyogyne huegelii "As Alyogyne are from the same family as Hibiscus, information on propagation for hibiscus is appropriate for Alyogyne, both for growing from seed or from cuttings. Propagation can be from seed, which keeps its viability for a number of years. It is helpful to rub the seed against a file or an emery board before planting the seed as this treatment will break through the hard protective coating and allow moisture to penetrate. Germination will be much faster after this treatment." "Hibiscus - nick and soak overnight. Seeds can be planted in a commercial seed starting medium or a mix can be made out of some combination of sand, perlite, vermiculite and Canadian peat. The seeds are planted 1/4 to 1/2" deep in the mixture and should germinate in a week to a month on average. It is best to keep the temperature about 80 to 85Â° F (about 28Â° C) and the medium moist, but not soggy. A heat mat to provide bottom heat is helpful."

Thanks, all for your ideas. I spoke with a gentleman from Rare Finds Nursery (Jackson, NJ) who astutely pointed out what I had overlooked: the ground would have to be leveled before concrete is poured; that would necessitate commercial machinery which could be used to dig out the plant (far too big to bring inside) and carry it to a different area of the garden to replant. I should be able to hold off until the end of September, when it would be more optimal and less hot. They think it will have enough time to establish itself in the new spot. That sounds like a good plan to me. At worst, I will have to buy a new plant next summer. Does anyone have any idea what variety that is? Cindy, that is a beautiful color! It is so similar to mine! Your caption (8/12/18) says that it is a TROPICAL, while your next post says they are supposed to be hardy. Hardy hibiscus and tropical hibiscus are two completely different things with different botanical names, as I am sure you are already aware. Thanks again for all of your help.

Seed is easy. You can also dig up a piece by the roots, or take cuttings. Any or all of the above work pretty well. All methods also require being kept fairly moist at all times.

I made cuttings this summer as well. A turn of the century and a Luna hybrid that I can't find the tag for now. Three cuttings rooted and were potted this morning. I stuck about 12. My soil had a fungus that killed the others. I'm learning. Now I use sand/peat mixture rather than potting soil.

Tropical hibiscus cuttings are very easy to root in soil or even water. I take semi hardwood cuttings about 5" long, strip most of the foliage and any buds then stick them in soil and keep them warm & moist. I don't bother with rooting hormones. I've also stuck cuttings in a glass of water with bottom heat. I don't know if it works with the hardy varieties.
