Diamond Frost Euphoria how to propagate or root from cuttings?

Just wanted to see if anyone could share their process for creating more plants from cuttings of Diamond Frost?

PS. I know it's registered but I'm only using for personal use in my household.

Diamond Frost Eurphorbia, who's real name is Euphorbia 'Inneuphdia', is patented, so propagating it for ANY reason, without permission, is illegal. Whether you are using it yourself is irrelevant. You may be unlikely to get caught, but just be aware that there is no exception for personal use when it comes to patented plants.

Quite honestly once you have bough a plant it's your's to do what ever you want with it except sell it in the case of patented plants. Controlling personal propagation of a patented plant is completely and utterly impossible and impracticle, so go ahead. There hasn't been a single precedent set arresting anyone who has. Openly propagating for commercial resale opens you up to possible trouble but they would need to do a DNA test to ascertain it's the patented cultivar. As there are at least six or seven cultivars now that's also quite difficult as they have all got the same genes just different growth characteristics. Technically you could simply say you took cuttings from wild plants. As they are not a hybrid but a species with various growth forms.

They are very easily propagated. Wait for a new flush of growth when it warms up in Spring or whenever in your climate then take cuttings. They are very skinny so take a load of them cutting half an inch bellow a node. As they produce milky latex sap you need to stop them "bleeding" as quickly as possible. Either dip them in ash or burn the cut end (not the node) for ten seconds or so with a lighter. Let the ends dry if dipped by leaving the cuttings in a safe place out of the sun for half an hour or so, wont take long. Then plant. As they are so skinny they tend to break if you try and push them into the ground so make holes with a dibbler in the seedling compost first. I find the sharp end of a chopstick very useful for this. Then gently push them in and water once and leave. Kept warm and just moist they form roots very quickly. There might be some leaf drop initially but dont worry about that, they soon recover. I put about five in a pot to get a nice bushy plant. That's it very easy. You can also simply root them in a glass of water in bright but not direct sunlight light in a window sill. Once rooted and growing it pays to shear very lightly occasionally to get a bushier plant. Good luck.

Last year was my first year to grow Diamond Frost, and I agree with you. It's the best "annual" for the south that's been introduced in awhile. It will bloom all the way to frost, at least. I only bought two plants last year, so I dug them both up, cut them back hard, and potted them right before first frost. I kept them growing in my basement all winter under flourescent lights. They did so well I had to cut them back twice. It is a patented plant, so it's illegal to propagate it, and that's all I am going to say. :)

How do I root clippings from Diamond Frost Euphorbia?

The link below provides information on Diamond Frost Euphorbia. According to the information on the site, it is hardy to Z10 but can be grown in colder zones and treated as an annual. I normally don't root cuttings to produce additional plants. I haven't found it to be a reliable method of filling my garden beds. I have enjoyed my purchased euphorbias, both the species polychroma and a purple cultivar 'Bonfire.' Is there anything I did/didn't do that has caused them not to root yet? How easily do clematis root from cuttings?

I live in zone 4 so what I often do is in the fall I drop the clematis in a trench dug along the wall and cover it up with soil. This gives the plant a step up in the spring. If I delay digging it up each node will send up a mini plant through the soil. At that point I cut as many as I want, scar the under side at the nodes, dust with growth powder and plant in a potting tray, sterilized, moistened soil. I then use a dry cleaning bag to create a mini greenhouse and place it in the shade and check periodically for soil moisture. (A translucent small storage box from Wal Mart would probably work just as well). Most will root and if they're green they're growing. A month or so later I'll plant them in an out of the way area and ignore them till next year. This method gives you lots of plants to work with and you're not babysitting a bunch of stems that are very delicate. The thing is that this is time intensive (two years to a respectable plant) and buying a plant is quicker gratification. But plants are like people, some are better looking and hardier than others. These are the ones I propagate. Someone will show up and admire your clematis. At that point you go to your patch, pot one up and present it to them. Or if you have a long chain link fence in two years you have a blooming hedge.

"Dahlias like vegetable fertilizer, which is typically low in nitrogen (the first number on the fertilizer package.) Use 5-10-10, 10-20-20, or the best would be 0-20-20." Dahlias need more nitrogen than this. There are posts on this forum about the "low nitrogen myth" Nitrogen washes out of soil and needs to be replenished every year. At the Bonneyville Dahlia trial garden sponsored by the American Dahlia Society they only use nitrogen as the fertilizer because their soil tests say that they have adequate pohosphorus and potassium in the soil. Without doing a soil test, most people should use something like the 5-10-10 or 10-20-20 but do so in moderation and do so several times in smaller amounts until about August 1st. Many people who have used fertilizer in their flower beds for several years will have a build up of phosphorus and should use fertilizer with low phosphorus. By the way, the new "greener" fertilizers are lower in phosphorus.
