Need help with Bougainvilleas

Hello!

I'm new posting in this forum, but I've been 'lurking' and finding lots of help in your discussions.

However, I could not find anything in Bougainvilleas. Maybe I'm in the wrong Forum, if so, please let me know.

I collect Bougainvilleas, all different colors, different leaves (variegated), etc.

Last year, we had a very strong typhoon, sustained winds of 190 MPH with gusts of 220 MPH for 12 hours. As you can imagine, total devastation. The majority of my Bougies were ripped, roots and all, have left about 10, the rest, 43, gone, nowhere to be found.

I'm trying to propagate so I can have at least 2 of each, and keep the duplicates in large pots, so I can move them inside during storms.

My question is: what is the best way to propagate? I know that is hard, I planted 18 cuttings and only one took :(

I would really appreciate any help you can help me. Sorry for the long post.

Nikki, I don't have any room to talk! As a result, I have found that Bougainvillea is incredibly forgiving. To restore it, keep it with your orchids, and water it a little more often. If those rocks are the ones that are glued on--they often are in the box stores--remove them, too. The glue is toxic to the plant, and you can always apply loose ones, later. Once it has lots of new growth, give it more sun than your orchids to encourage bloom. Good luck! : ])

I have a large red bougainvillea that has survived 28 deg temps for 15 years. This winter we had 18.5-20 degrees and I think it's still alive, I see branches that are still reddish on the outside, not dead brown. Everytime it gets zapped by cold weather it looks real bad until spring, and then it comes back stronger than the year before...it's almost as if it's been pruned by the frost. So don't give up on it until you know for sure it's not going to come back. jc

A few questions... 1.) Does your soil drain, or does it have a tendency to stay wet? 2.) Was the soil it came potted in, peaty? It's possible that you may think you are watering your plant but the soil your plant came in is not holding on to water. Peat moss soils are notorious for this--especially when exposed to hot, sunny conditions. I would take it out of the ground, loosen up that root ball some so roots are not girdled and replant. Don't feed until it looks happier if at all.--these plants do great in arid, low fertility soils.

Did your instructions tell you to remove all but a few leaves (no more than 4)? If you took a long cutting with 15-20 leaves, it may be way too much for the stem cutting to support AND try to put on roots. There are many people who root things in water and insist that that's the way some plants should be started, but in Master Gardener class we were taught that the fine, spidery roots that set on under water end up dying when transplanted to dirt and the plant just has to grow them again. It's best to start in moist soil when possible to minimize transplant shock when the time comes.

I am new to this forum also. I tried with bougies for the first time and have a few which have rooted. These are the webs I found to be quite good. Hope you enjoy them. Good luck with the propagation.

Sorry I didn't check this forum earlier but we just finished having a typhoon, not as bad as Katrina, never the less, had lots of cleaning, pruning, cutting broken limbs on my plumerias and other trees, that just now I'm able to read some posts.
Redrobins link is the one! I found it in one of the old postings (in this forum) and really liked it.
I will be trying it now since many branches were broken and so they don't go to waste.
