Can I propagate vigna caracalla from a cutting ?

This will be my first blooming vigna caracalla, and it's covered in buds now. I'm terribly excited ! I want to make some new starts, and I've been reading that sometimes, for whatever reason, they don't always form seed pods. I grew this one from seed, but in case I don't get any seeds from this one, can I root a cutting ? If so, what's the best way to go about it ? I don't have a lot of experience with cuttings, so do I root it in soil or in water ? If I should root it in water, would some kind soul please explain the process I should follow ? I've not had much luck with this method before.

Take cuttings of firm new growth apply 0.1% IBA (Rooting Hormone) stick in well drained soil & mist taking 15-40 days to root.

Thanks George ! I was beginning to think I wouldn't get any answers....If you see this note, please let me know if using seed starting soil is o.k.

Crap! I blew it Daniella. I woke up late cause I woke up at 4 am to a couple people dressed in white tyvek coveralls, with hoods pulled over there heads! They were right under my bedroom window crawling on there bellies acting very strange. Then a car pulled up and talked to them and left and they came back to my yard. I thought I was gonna have to cap em til I realized they were wasted. I ran them off and called the law then went back to bed. Just woke up a lil while ago. I was gonna try and get it shipped out still but, I started seperating mimosa seeds from pods and I noticed some little grey beetles in the grocery bag.Then I seen some emerging from seeds. I proly busted open 30 seeds from different pods out of the quarter grocery bag that me and Danielle picked and every seed had a larva in it. Glad I caught that before I sent you 500 little grey beetles in a box :) I think UPS might be open later I'll check with them. If not I'll have to wait til monday. First I gotta see if I cant find some mimosa seedlings already growing. I'm sorry. I'll keep you posted

I'm not familiar with this plant, but if the tuber is like a dalhia, you can most likely cut off the new tuber with a piece of the stem and start a new plant.

You will be waiting quite a while for the tuber to develop, especially if you aren't in a frost free zone. It can be propagated from cuttings but they aren't the easiest to root. I didn't realize the tuber was edible but had heard that possibly the flowers were. I grow it because it's beautiful and has a great fragrance. Never considered eating it. Hi. Phaseolus caracalla is the non fragrant Snail vine, Vigna caracalla is the fragrant Corkscrew vine. The foliage is the same but the blooms are very different. I've wintered both over with no problem. I used to keep them inside with HID lights but now I keep the stems cut back to a few inches and keep them in the greenhouse. Here's an old post that shows pics of both. Top is Snail, bottom Corkscrew. As you can see this has been confusing for a long time. lol BTW Corkscrew vine seeds are larger and rounder. use any kind that is soiless. i always use staygreen, alot of people like to use promix. some use sand. but keep it damp and don't forget to mist!! :') good Luck!!! water method just rots them, i learned this also! thanks to george! also the baggie method works too. you can place a baggie over the top to hold the moisture in. that helps alot if your in airconditioning. make sure to let it breath though. LOL ~Medo

I have rooted them in both potting soil and water. The water method was purely an accident as I was cutting back to bring in for the winter. Could not bear to throw those long runners away so I stuck them in a bucket of water and set them aside. I was very surprised the following spring when I was moving plants out and found the bucket. Several of the runners had good roots on them and did well when I potted them up. Don't know if it would happen again but it did that once.
