Hi Tia, I agree with John regarding the tolerance of the Meyer to those temperatures - I've had both in-ground and a potted Meyer out all winter with temps in the 40s with absolutely no problem. Regarding whether to repot now or later in a soil-less mix, I think the general thinking is to repot a Meyer during one of its "dormant" phases, when it's not producing a new flush of leaves (and don't fret too much if flowers/fruit are present, since Meyers will usually have one, the other, or both throughout the year). If it is in a (leaf) growth phase, you may want to hold off repotting until the new leaves have hardened off a bit (say sometime in the early Summer). Personally, I'm an advocate of getting it into the soil-less mix as early in the growing season as possible, putting it on a regular citrus fertilizer schedule, and taking advantage of the entire growing season to put on leaf and root 'bulk' before the coming cold season. Why wait to repot until a tree has lost it's vigor, I say... Also, there's the advantage of not having to worry about over-watering with an appropriately made soil-less mix. And don't worry about the pot size if you're going to be using the gritty or 5-1-1 mix, since (as stated) there is no risk of overwatering a well-made mix. My criteria for pots, for example, include using only ones that are in proportion to the tree, have sufficient holes for drainage, and are plastic for easier transport. Finally, remember that citrus are quite forgiving and a lot of people (myself included) have lost most/all leaves of the Meyer when transplanting, and yet they still manage to come back. Well, I went ahead and bought some seeds from the local nursery. I planted about 10 "spots" and put 3 seeds in each spot. Three weeks later I'm only seeing a sprout from ONE of the spots. I went back to the nursery and asked them about it and the lady tells me that I wasn't watering them enough. I'm fairly new to this so I can't say for sure, but her explanation seemed kind of bogus. The one sprout that has come up looks great. It has 3 really nice looking leaves and keeps growing. Her explanation was that I wasn't watering enough so the roots were coming too close to the top because that's where the moisture is and then they dried out. I watered the whole area the same so I can't understand why one of them would grow so well and the others not. Thinking about this made me remember reading something in a book or on web about how you're supposed to do something to the seeds before planting them. Of course, I can't remember the details. It's probably too late to do another planting but I'd like to know for next year. I still have about half the bag of seeds left. Thanks for any info.

Unfortunately you didn't do it too well- the wounding (and I don't even wound it at all, except for breaking off the prickles) is VERY GENTLE scrape with a pin or the side of a razor blade. What you have done is more like a pencil sharpening, which is far too harsh. Your top growth means the stem is metabolizing its carbohydrate stores to grow a stem and leaves, but not any roots, because you temperature is too high, or too much sun or light, or something. Use google, to search what George Mander and Cheryl Netter do, also search this forum for other people that have had good success, someone like object16, although I haven't seen him/her post much lately after being involved in a nasty flame war over the optimum temperature for photosynthesis. Cindee, I don't have a photobucket account so I use tinypic.com I right click on a picture in my easy share album. Then choose edit. Once that picture comes up, go to image and click on that, from the drop down menu, choose stretch and skew. I use 45% 45% and hit enter, Then I go to my file menu and choose save as and save it in My Documents with an appropriate name. When you are trying to post here, minimize this screen, then go to google and type in "Tinypic.com" Once it comes up, go to browse and then go to your documents and choose the picture you saved. Click on the name of the picture. Tinypic will ask you to type in 2 words to load your picture. Once you have done that, choose the top address line, click on that and choose copy, then click on this site that you have minimized, and right click and choose paste. You can keep going back and forth between the sites to add more pictures to your post. It sounds more complicated than it is, and believe me, if I could learn how to do it, anybody can.
