Indoor naga morich, bhut jolokia lighting??

Hey! I'm new to this forum, and i'm here to ask a few questions about growing naga morich, and bhut jolokia peppers indoors. I'm ready to buy a growing light for this operation, but i don't quite know what type of grow-light would be suitable for this. I was wondering if a 150-400 HPS light would do the trick. It's for the winter, i'm planning on doing it during the snowy months. Seeing as how i'min Montreal... these peppers are almost impossible to grow outdoors... so i need a light to do the full job.

Welcome,

A 400W HID light should adequately cover a 4x4 foot area. I would look for a convertible ballast and start with a MH light and switch to HPS for flowering and pod production.

If you haven't done so yet, you should check out the hydroponics forum here on GW as well.

As for growing outside (I'm a couple of hundred K west of you in Ottawa), I started my Bhut seeds Jan. 5 and moved them up to 5 gallon pots under a 400W MH and moved them outside early June. They're doing well and I should have a decent harvest by end of our season.

i am in the toronto area and i have one plant indoors (it has never seen outside) growing very nicely under a UFO L.E.D. grow light (90 watts).

i have a 2x4' grow tent on the way and will start my first hydroponics garden consisting of jalapenos and habaneros. i will use the same LED light and keep my naga jolokia in soil until it is big enough for me to clone.

Before the 'Bhut Jolokia' won the Guinness record there was a rumor going around about a pepper called the Naga Jolokia (aka Tezpur, Assam, PC-1) being a C. Frutescens at 855,000 SHU. Seed companies started selling whatever they could sell with that name even though they didn't have a clue as to the proper variety. http://www.fiery-foods.com/dave/heatlevels2001.html Ecoseeds and Reimers as is evidenced in the above link both jumped on the bandwagon. In truth, the PC-1, Assam, Tezpur/Naga Jolokia they and whoever else were selling or trading WAS NEVER THE PEPPER cited in the SHU results from India. Many are selling or trading the PC-1 cayenne type pepper as a Naga/Bhut/Bih Jolokia million+ SHU pepper based on both bad information and fraud. Ebay is overrun with fraud seed claiming to be the million plus variety but is actually the cayenne-type variety. According to Frontal Agritech all the Naga/Bhuts are the same species just different names. http://www.frontalagritech.co.in/products.htm The real deal is a C. Chinense. However some people think there are differences. I have grown seed marked Bhut, Naga and Dorset and they all grew close enough so that if I didn't have labels on the pots I wouldn't have known the difference. I have not grown anything labeled Bih yet but based on what I have read and grown so far I wouldn't expect a difference. Ahh yes, the Naga / Jolokia naming game ;-) The Nagas / Jolokias go by MANY different names including Nagahari, Bhut Jolokia, Bih Jolokia, Borbih, Raja Mircha, Raja Chilli, Mirch, Mircha, Naga Moresh, Naga Morich, Tezpur, and Dorset Naga. It's easy to get confused as to what is what. Here's some info I saved from a pepper site a few years ago. Bhut Jolokia, Bih Jolokia, Naga Jolokia, Naga Morich, Raja Mirchi ... what's the deal with all those different names you can read in print and on the Internet these days for supposedly the very same chile variety? We asked someone who should know best: Leena Saikia of Frontal Agritech, a pepper grower and processing company in Assam that also grows and cultivates Bih Jolokia. Here's what Leena told me: All these chillies are from North East India. They belong to Capsicum chinense. In fact, Naga jolokia, Nagahari, Bhut jolokia, Bih jolokia or Borbih jolokia are the same chilli but named differently at different places. For example, the Assamese community call it as Bih jolokia (poison chilli -- jolokia means chilli in Assamese), Bhut jolokia (probably due to its ghostly bite or introduction by the Bhutias from Bhutan poison chilli) or Naga jolokia (due to extreme hotness representing the aggressive temperament of the warriors of neighbouring Naga community). In Nagaland and Manipur states, it is known as Raja Mircha or Raja chilli (King of Chillies). In major Indian languages, chilli is known as Mirch or mircha (Bengali and Hindi). Morich" may be a distorted version of 'mirch'. With respect to C. chinense Bih and Bhut difference, I recall reading that Bihs had some C.frutescens genes and Bhuts had some C.annuum genes. I think either name, Naga or Jolokia, works as long as you're describing a group of C. chinense pepper varieties from the Assam region of India. The different names come into play when you narrow them down to mutations that exhibit specific traits i.e. Naga Morich being plumper and shorter than longer Bhut Jolokias. Just my 2 cents.

I am not experiencing the massive flower drop as mentioned. My plants are outside and grown from seed - without a doubt BJ's are comparatively LATE to flower and fruit but the flower drop is definitely indicative of a problem in my opinion. From my experience with Bhut Jolokia the last 3 years I am convinced that they are the exception to overwatering a pepper plant, though I still caution all to underwater rather than overwater. I am in Toronto, Canada and the weather has been cool and overcast with lot's of rain, but this doesn't seem to bother the BJ's other than to delay flowering. Here are some pics of one plant, I hope they are clear. You can see small peppers on it. Ravi

Interesting. IÂve read mixed reviews on the use of LEDs. Does your pepper plant produce ripened peppers under your UFO LED?

my plant hasnt got that far yet. it was in a 5" clay pot when it started to bud and i got two blooms but then i noticed a lot of the roots were coming to the surface of the soil so i decided to transplant it to a 12" pot. i think i will lose these blooms and have to wait for the next flower cycle. i may even snip these blooms and buds and let it grow bigger before it blooms again (it is about 10" tall right now).

I'm growing 2 ghost peppers in my house right now. I have them under a grow lite and they seem to be doing fairly well except that i'm experiencing a lot of flower drop. I haven't had fruit yet but i am getting lots of blooms. Any thoughts on what steps i could take to promote fruit growth.

i grew bhut jolokias last yeah i started in march with one of those grow the worlds hottest pepper kits and i got one to survive and produce fruit. this year im gonna start at the end of the month i have a heat mat and a thermostat for it and i will be using one hydrofarm 2 foot t5 grow light with a 72-cell self watering system. i will have 30 bhut plants 12 trinidad scorpions butch t and some other plants will my setup be enough or will i need more lights.

Should be ok to start, but, you will probably want to add another light or two as the plants get bigger / transplanted into regular pots just due to the footprint that takes.
