Good evening everyone!

Hey, I thought I'd try to start a plant from just an old ugly stick and you know what? It's putting out KeiKis!

I had some odds & ends & middles I didn't want to throw out so here's the line up!

It's all Kimo cuttings and yes! they are so skinny ( undergrowth )

Ok Stuart you are magical! Does everything you touch grow?? Unbelievable! And here I am still waiting on my cuttings to do something. ANYTHING! LOL

Hey, that thing sat in a pot for 2 months!
And I thought, if it didn't jump out of the pot and run I'd try to save it!
Same with the real skinny one on it's left, had no chance growing under the canopy of the tree, just long and skinny.
Sometimes it's good to test yourself and learn from experience!

This one was on the table at a book club potluck last week. Everyone raved and wanted the recipe. I'm going to cross post in new recipes. Zucchini Pickles - Heidi Swanson, 100 Cookbooks There are quite a number of ways to play around with the personality of these pickles. Sometimes I shave the zucchini paper-thin, resulting in a whispy tangle of pickled zucchini and onions. Other times I want my pickles to have a bit more bite, structure, and definition. In those instances, I slice the zucchini thicker, perhaps 1/8-inch, and let them drain as long as possible, sometimes overnight refrigerated. Also worth noting, when I make them for our personal condiment stash, I used a brown natural cane sugar. It gives the pickle liquid a brownish cast that, quite frankly, weirds people out if they don't know what is causing it. So, if I'm making the pickles to bring to a BBQ or something, I'll make them with regular organic cane sugar - one that is lighter in color.  3 medium zucchini (1 pound / 16 oz / 450 g), thinly sliced  1 medium white onion, thinly sliced  3 shallots, thinly sliced 1 1/2 tablespoons fine grain sea salt  1/4 cup (small handful) fresh dill sprigs 1 small fresh red chile pepper, very thinly sliced 1/2 tablespoon yellow mustard seeds 3/4 cup / 180 ml cider vinegar  3/4 cup / 180 ml white wine vinegar  1/3 cup / 1.75 oz / 50g natural cane sugar  Toss the zucchini, onion, shallots, and salt together in a colander and place over a bowl to catch the liquids. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least a couple hours. Toss once or twice along the way. You're aiming to get as much liquid out of the zucchini as possible.  When you're finished draining the zucchini, shake off any water. At this point you want the zucchini as dry as possible. Place in a 1 liter / 1 quart jar along with the dill, chile pepper, and mustard seeds. Alternately, you can cram them into a 3/4 liter Weck jar like I do, but it's always a bit snug in the jar. Combine the ciders and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer, stirring until the sugar dissolves, and continue to boil for a few minutes. Pour the liquid over the zucchini and seal the jar. Let cool, then refrigerate. The pickles are good for a week or so.   Makes one large jar. Grout does not have to get disgusting! Mine isn't and never has been! I have had tile countertops all my life and they clean up just fine. My beautiful artisan tile countertops (complete with trim, but costing more than stone) in my new kitchen clean up just fine. One does have to actually clean up after oneself, though... Tile is a wonderfully functional and easy on the planet choice. Route66Services, I agree that 4"x4" tiles are a more retro look than 6"x6", but either will be fine. Another traditional look is to have contrasting trimwork. That part comes from the fact that stores only tended to stock a few colors. The "8 week backorder" that LWO referred to regarding trim pieces is actually a "we have to make those up for you and it's going to take a little while" thing. Don't let it sway you. Just plan ahead, and give yourself some leeway because tile companies over promise on delivery dates. If the tiles don't pass inspection, they have to start all over again. And sometimes, they have to wait a month to finish a big run before making your tiles. This is the big boys. It's the same with the artisans, but they're more forthcoming with the time frame. Most of all, however, it's important that you get a really good tile setter who knows how to do countertops. You can't just glue the tiles to the underlayment with thinset the way some people do with backsplashes. The best backing is an old fashioned mortar bed, though there are some backerboards that I think are appropriate for counters. Done right, with wet mortar, also takes time, because it has to cure. But it's worth it. I have a feeling a lot of the horror stories about tile come from people whose tile wasn't set correctly. BTW, good quality tile made from good quality bisque, set correctly, is very hard to break, and shouldn't do so just from random stuff falling on it. It should take the equivalent of a sledge hammer in full swing. Even that might not break it on first try. If you're interested in going artisan, I can recommend Architerra-NW. Gorgeous tile, amazingly good bisque, and all the trims you could ever want. Daltile, however, is mass produced (i.e., faster) and their plain, glossy tiles should give you that retro look you want.

Of course it all depends on exactly what disease your plants had as there are a couple of exceptions, but most fungus and bacteria diseases don't overwinter in soil depending on where you live and your winter weather. Most require some sort of living tissue to survive on. A common practice with containers is in the spring, prior to planting, dump the container out on a tarp and mix it up well with some fresh mix ( about 1/4-1/3 new) - you are using a soil-less potting mix right? Recharge it with some fresh fertilizer, toss any root balls or root masses left in the soil, refill the containers and plant. Dave

Lilyfinch, I was just trying to rock the boat a bit and came off sounding harsh. I didn't mean to imply that you think fungicides are evil. And I don't use them because we don't have fungal diseases here on roses, so I should quit feeling so self righteous. I do feel there is sometimes confusion on the forum about sprays because fungicides are not the same as insecticides. If my roses got blackspot, I would use fungicides. LL, I think Evelyn is mostly apricot and is called that by David Austin. But pink Evelyn roses do show up fairly regularly. They are lovely, too, cause she's most always lovely. I'm in love with Evelyn, so I'm not biased--ha. Diane

Wah... mine are not doing anything.

Mona I hate to break it to you but I just felt the cutting you sent me and it's pretty squishy. So I don't think that will survive. So that will make 5 cuttings I have killed. 3 left... let's see if they survive. I did not mess w/ them this time. Maybe it doesn't like being looked at?? I don't know but they are on my kitchen counter under the sky light/window so whenever I cook/clean I'm staring at them. :(

What kind you you have that your not having any luck with?
I'm thinking of selling rooted cuttings next April.
I have quite a collection I'm putting together and my success rate is 100% out of 400+ plumeria cuttings this year.
I just sent a 3 foot 4 tip plant still in the dirt to California from Florida and it was perfect on arrival leaves and all.
Do you think this is what some folks would appreciate?
I've got sticks that fall on the ground here from when we have high winds and then they root right into the ground before I can pick them up! ( I've got photos coming soon to show this )
All my potted cutting get outside sunlight directly on the black nursery pots, this heat stimulates the root growth coupled with very high humidity.
VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure the cuttings callous properly!
Fresh cut doesn't mean plant right away!!! I lay mine in a cardboard box in the garage and forget them for weeks on end, then I plant them.
Your thoughts?

Lynn - honestly, it probably is not your fault if you lose the cutting because it was already somewhat soft when I received it. I even told Freak that I almost regretted offering it to you because I didn't want it to be another failure for you. Honestly! You can ask him.

Yes, as I mentioned in the email mine is doing fine and I told you how I stuck it out in the rain and it plumped back up and is rooting now. Maybe I lucked out? Maybe it actually did need some water? Who knows but don't fret about it.

Maybe you need to take your other cuttings and put them outside where they get some sun.

If staring at plants would harm them none of mine would be alive! LOL

Stuart - I would love to buy some cuttings when you start selling

Lynn - I wanted to clarify a little better on why I think mine has rooted and yours has rotted. It was very hot when I mailed that cutting to you. So it spent days and days in route to me, then I turned around and mailed it to you. That's a long time traveling and makes a big difference!

These are cuttings I bought from Upland. They were very healthy looking so I know it's not them.

Janada was the one that had some roots but she still does not push any leaves.

Tomorrow I am going to move them outside and ignore them. Maybe that will do the trick.

Stuart, you totally have the green plumie thumb :) I think rooted cuttings are certainly something people are interested in! I never wanted to pay double the price for rooted ones but lately I've seen a lot of them at the same price or only for a few bucks more rooted, so why not?! If I can get a rooted one for almost the same as a non-rooted, then absolutely!
