planting out rooted cuttings z6

I'd like to root some phlox subulata cuttings. My books on propagation reccomend planting out the following spring, but do I need to wait until then? Would it be possible for me to start rooting cuttings now and plant them out in the fall (in New England, z6)? Thanks.

Phylox subulata is a semi-evergreen and you can try and take softwood cuttings between now and August.

I know better, almost never got the first person to pay me. I didn't use to have any problem with swaps, 1 or 2 out of 30 or so would not uphold their end of the agreement but this is ridiculous. I sent extra stuff, like plumeria, epi cuttings, stuff to fill in the boxes and after bugging me about shipping for weeks they won't even reply now. Good luck on finding cuttings. It is a lot of work to mail plants, I sent rooted cuttings, you have to wrap and protect them, go get boxes, go mail boxes, $$$ involved, not cheap anymore. BAH!

A rooted cutting is a bit they cut off the main plant and rooted either in water or soil. For example for when I had to prune my philodendron, I cut of 4 long strands of stem. I then cut those 4 stems into sections that had at least 5 leaves on them. Then I stuck the stems in water where they produced roots which now means they are rooted cuttings. So it's not that big. They both can be referred to as a rooted plant however, but if I am correct a rooted plant probably means the full plant which should be in a pot. Before buying you could contact the seller to clarify what they mean, and or ask for photos.

Thanks for the comments. This dieback didn't occur during winter, it occurred during last summer after the gardener planted them. During the winter, I did get a little bit of winter leaf burn, but I trimmed off the leaves, and that damage was a lot less. OK, I will try pruning the dead stems down a little further. I have no other space to put them, actually, not sure what I would do with them if I took them out. If I put the 2 damaged ones right next to eachother I could perhaps get 1 full looking holly but that probably isn't good for the plants. That is a downspout nearby, yes. It empties into the pond, so fortunately doesn't flood the sky pencils. As for the A/C unit, it's been a while since we had it on but I think the hot air coming out of the unit mostly goes upward. That is a good point, though I didn't think about air coming out of the compressor potentially affecting these shrubs. I will evaluate this summer. (Last year my worries were all about the shrubs shortening the life of our A/C unit.... my thoughts were the other way around). Sounds like I need to be patient and there may be some hope for these hollies.... may be it will bother me less once I figure out what to plant in front of them

Here I am running late with a few suggestions (just what you need--more roses on your list). Frederic Mistral is a wonderful cut flower for bouquets and has an exquisite scent. He is a Romantica from Meilland and a large hybrid tea. FM is a bit on the cold tender side. I think Love Song is the very best lavender out there, but she doesn't have much scent. Angel Face is wonderful unless you have black spot problems. I agree about Evelyn and her glorious scent and look. Diane Evelyn with Sarah Bernhardt peoniesFrederic MistralEvelyn in late November with much darker coloration due to the cold.

I'd plant them in beds outdoors. They should do just fine. No need to water very much if outdoors.

Can I skip the step of rooting the in pots or should I still start them in pots until they show some root growth?

I wouldn't root them in pots at all. The best way to root your cuttings is by intermittent mist. Your chance of rooting success if planting cuttings is greatly diminished if you just stick your cuttings in a pot. If you don't have an intermittent mist system, you can build yourself a very simple propagation system. Here is a picture of mine.

The bottom frame is made of 1x4s and has a firm screen on the underneath to allow for drainage. A good growing medium is 3 parts perlite, 1 part peat moss. Take your cuttings and dip them in rooting hormone (any full service garden center will have them). Make sure you follow the instruction on the bottle. The concentration of the rooting hormone will depend on if you're doing softwood or hardwood cuttings. Gently tamp down your cuttings and water well to remove any air pockets.
The "cover" is a 10 gallon aquarium which is painted white. The white paint will reflect most of the sun's heat, while the stripes will allow just the right amount of sun.
After watering your cuttings, place the cover over it. That's it! Moisture will form on the inside of the aquarium which tells you that you don't have to water.
It may take 4-6 weeks in order for your cuttings to develop roots. Then carefully remove your RC's (rooted cuttings) and plant them in a bed with well drained soil.
The problem with planting them in pots is that you will need to water them much more frequently than you would if you plant them in beds. Raised beds are best, especially if you live in an area with clay soil.
