9-foot Plumeria Fell Over!! HELP!!

I have a 9-foot plumeria tree in Santa Ana, CA that got

too heavy on one side and fell over. It is over 20

years old and was brought from Hawaii in the 1980's.

Approximately 1/2 of the tree trunk was ripped from

the root structure and approximately 1/2 of the tree

trunk appears to remain intact down into the root

structure.

Kimi's suggested that I reach out to hobbyists to see

if anybody could help me save the tree in exchange for

a bunch of mature branches. Would you be so kind as to

see if any of your people would be interested?

This tree was my grandmothers pride & joy, and she

passed away last year. So this tree has a huge amount

of sentimental value to my family.

Any bit of help/advice you could offer would be

greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Is your banana tree planted close to the fence? If it is which is like most of my bananas, I would use a stretchable green tie string to secure the banana close to the fence. You may need to double up or triple the string if your tree is a huge one. Or if it is close to any steady structure like another sturdy plant with strong stem/trunk or a pole, that might work too. And if none of these are available, then stake a long wood plank (not the regular garden stakes for they might be too weak) or pipe section into the ground close to the banana tree and secure it to the support with stretchable string so as not to hurt the pseudostem. It's good you're not giving up on your banana. There's always a chance they may come around. As to your question to whether to cut the brown leaves or not, I'm not for sure, but I would think if they're really dried up, they won't be of any use anyway. Maybe for the reason of lightening the load of the tree, it might be better off without the dead leaves?

I would say it's around three foot. I mover two this spring and they were a little over six foot and the root balls were about 1/3 the size of the tree. I would have some supports on hand and have a few people to help. Seeing you from Texas I would say deep south being a tree in the ground this size. Myself I would wait till spring but if it has to be moved you have a few months of growing I would say. Good Luck Don

Stephanie Pearl McPhee says in her book "Knitting Rules:" "The length of a person's foot is about 15% of his height. If you know how tall someone is...you can probably make that person a pair of socks that fits reasonably well." She also says that the length of a person's foot measures pretty much the same as that person's forearm, measured from elbow to wristbone. If you can measure him, he'll think you are going to make him a sweater. Don't know if there is any sense to her theories, but there they are.

w/ the second, I'm sure the kids would just knock it over all the time. And, the floor isn't quite level, of course, in order to drain; being a small shower, it's a noticeable slope. I'm afraid it would fall over. I've seen the screw-on baskets; I really want to avoid holes in the wall. I live in an apt. building, and just don't want to pay for the water damage to everybody below me should water get in there somehow. I really do like the first one--but that $175 price tag is just WAY too much. The cheap ones cost $20, so how come a really good one costs TEN TIMES MORE? Triple, quadruple, five times more, I'd spring for. But ten times?

If the trunk is not completely severed from the root structure, I would try to stake it back up to see if it will heal. It may need permanent staking for a long time. A lot depends on how long it has been in this condition.

I would go to home depot and buy a 10' electrical conduit pipe. You can spray it brown or green with a rustoleum paint. Pound it in the ground next to the up side of the tree. Go to Armstrongs or Flowerdale or maybe HD and get the inch wide plastic plant tie in a roll about the size of masking tape. Have someone help you carefully lean the tree back up to the conduit and tie it several places to the pipe. You can also pull up drooping branches with the tape and tie them to the conduit. If it is still connected to the roots it should recover and the conduit will hold it steady in winds. Bill (if it breaks free of the root ball you can re-root it but that is another problem. e-mail me if you have problems as I am not too far from you )

Sorry to see your situation. A lot of thought needs to go into solving you dilemma. It is not possible for me to see just how much of the trunk is truly detached. Regardless, I am almost tempted to suggest that you attempt to completely remove the tree and get it to re root in a large container(you will need go info on how). You need to be very concerned about your tree sitting in the hot sun!!!!!!!!! You also need to be aware that if you try to stake the tree and notice it didn't work about a month from now... that you will have to try and container root it and we will be entering into cooler nights and much trickier re rooting.

If you ever do try to re root the whole tree you will need to be very careful about not over watering it / letting rain water it when tree goes dormant and temps drop..

Your problem is fixable but choices need to be made and action need to follow FAST.
