HELP! Are my plants dying?

I have these two types of plants, planted need my swimming pool. I had another one die as it had too much water, but I have not watered in 2 weeks, we have had some rain, but the ground is not soaking wet?? Can anyone tell me if these plants are getting too much water, not enough or what can I do to save them?? They get full sun. Thank you very much!!!

Overwatering and underwatering can often produce very similar symptoms. The signs of leaf spot on the nandina and the dropping of lower/interior foliage on the Indian hawthorn (a very drought tolerant plant) would lead me to guess these are being overwatered as opposed to under.

But it is impossible to tell for certain without checking the soil and preferrably to the depth of the rootball. The soil should be loose and free-draining and be allowed to dry slightly between waterings. It should feel just barely moist - not wet - to the touch.

might help to know where you are.. drought??.. heat waves?? watering schedule?? .. how deep that rock is?? and recent transplants..??? otherwise.. it looks like normal fall coloring.. to my eye.. after a hard summer.. they just look tired ... and buried in rock ... BTW.. are they near a pool??? .. chemical damage??? ken

Agree with Ed - herbicide damage. It can be the drift from spraying by you or a neighbor up to 1/2 a mile away. Tomato plants are exceptionally susceptible to it. It can also be brought in to the garden in mulch or compost added to the soil. Search 'herbicide damage' here for many discussions about it. Dave

does that red bowl have drainage ... do you let them NEAR dry out before watering ... do you insert finger and water when they need it.. or on some schedule??? where are you ... what is your media ... one problem with diverse pot sizes... is that they all dont need water at the same time ... so little ones might get drowned ... did you spray anything on the first??? can you tip any of them out of the pot.. with the media intact .... and see if the roots are rotting off??? .. or do you see healthy white tips ... because you have similar problems on diverse plants.. i am thinking its a cultural issue ... meaning.. sun.. water.. drainage .. etc ... rather than disease or bug... there is a container forum ... and i bet you would learn all kinds of things reviewing a couple hundred posts over there ... and the single most important thing in a pot.. is the media .. not the pot nor the plant ... read up on al's gritty mix ... to learn all about media.. and its functions .. etc ... i am sure you dont need his recipe for dump truck fulls.. lol ... but its the knowledge i want you to soak up ... ken

Part of the reason I keep houseplants, is for their contribution to the environment. They do clean the air and we all could use that, since indoor air pollution can be worse than outdoors. There are a lot of low light plants to use. But, really, it makes more sense to plan to have plants near a window. Some people who use plants as decorations, can still do that, as long as they rotate them into the light on a regular basis. Fake plants are one of my pet peeves. [g] My daughter has a couple because she is way too busy to keep a plant alive. My husband who was not interested in plants for years, but who helps in the garden, suddenly decided he wanted plants in his office. Now he has about 6 plants in his collection. We try to find him easy care plants and he consistently waters, but that's it. If they're not doing well, we replace them.
