Cabbage plants

The cabbage plants (real name ??) that I planted last fall did well through the winter and now have put on 18 inches of foliage. I expect they will die soon, right?

Is it possible to take cuttings or otherwise propgate these plants?

Thanks for any advice.

You are probably looking at the actual flower stem of the plant which has bolted (gone to seed). That is triggered by the warm weather.
Keep watch and it may flower, and then produce seed. Collect these and plant them in late summer or early fall for a new crop. There is little hope of keeping the plant or any part of it alive thru the summer.

And propagation by SEED is the only method that works.....

As a very general guideline most brassicas/cole crops like cabbage are planted 6 weeks to a full month before tomatoes and/or peppers. So in theory if you plant your tomatoes Memorial Day then your cabbages would have been planted in mid-to late April. If willing to cover/protect as needed from late freezes they can go out even earlier. They are often one of the first things planted out to the garden as they are quite cold tolerant but not very heat tolerant. But as glib said above 'how' tolerant all depends on the variety you use. Late Flat Dutch is a 100 day cabbage variety and is often planted here in mid to late February while Early Jersey Wakefield is only a 70 day cabbage and tho very cold tolerant still does good here with even later planting dates. If you're positive there are no caterpillars then you should go out at night and check for slugs. The little bugs flying around sound like fungus gnats caused from having the mix in the pot too wet or from having a dirt/compost component in the potting mix. Their larva can do damage to the roots if they are in high enough concentrations but they don't damage leaves. What size pot is? What type of mix is it planted in? How much are you watering? And how much sun does the plant get? Rodney

Roselee; I haven't grown 'little rio' before, but most cabbage will be able to head up if planted now. I typically start mine in ~ late sept., early nov. Cabbage loves cold weather, but will do o.k. till mid-summer when the cabbage bugs pretty much get the best of it! Plant at least a foot apart, and it should do fine. Cabbage is edible at any stage, but is best when it 'heads' and the outer leaves blanch the inner ones. Shade, and plenty of water will help, as well as a healthy dose of 13-13-13 fertilizer once a month. Jerry

Tom W27 and George5il: Thank you both. Exactly the information I was looking for.

I'll be looking for the seeds. If you can point me to tips on collecting them and starting them off I'd welcome getting them.

I didn't know anything about propagation of Cabbage but in the nice Spring we have been having, I have been planting and rooting most anything so when my wife was preparing Cabbage and I saw little roots trying to grow from the stem she cut away, I took the stem and planted it in my pot garden on the front porch. It came up with 5 little cabbage plants so I dug it up and cut them apart and so far, they all seem to be surviving in other flower pots. I may not get any cabbage to eat but it is fun watching them grow. I have already bought her a Red Cabbage so that I can try this on a red cabbage as well as the green.
