Anyone start new plants this time of year?

With cool summers up here the past two years I've resigned myself to the fact that without using artificail light and keping my house at 75 all winter growing super hots is a two year proposition. I have a couple of yellow ghosts I started last fall that are just now putting out their first flowers. I bought some ghosts from a market a few weeks ago and planted some seads. They all came up at once last weekend. I picked two and discarded the rest. There should be enough summer left that get established by fall and can produce next summer. Anyone else start anything in the middle of summer? I planted some serrano seeds this weekend to.

I have 2 reapers about 2" tall now and have avenir, starfish, thai bird and Brazilian rainbow germinating in wet paper towls now. I'm probably crazy for starting them now but I guess I'll just have to see how well they do.

Good luck to you too. I'll just bring them in for the winter and set them in a window. then bring them out next spring.

I'll be glad to help out a young gardner! (I wish I'd started getting interested when I was 14.) I've got some loquats I can send you. They can get quite tall with enough light, but don't need direct sun. They have a very cool 1950s look~big leathery leaves and, if you're lucky, delicious fruit. I also have some baby amaryllis that were grown from seed. I got them in a trade a couple of years ago. They're supposed to have orange blossoms, but mine haven't bloomed yet. I maintain a local volunteer museum cottage garden downtown Calistoga, which is still a learning experience after 10 years. The front garden faces south east with a large expanse of blacktop which draws heat like a magnet. Most of our visitor traffic is in the summer so keeping the garden colorful through the summer is important. Last week I took out the primroses that lasted well through the winter and replaced with Lantana, well rooted in one gallon containers. Two containers, three gallon, flanking the stairway which contained Ranunculus(which fried there)I replaced with "purple dome asters"that had been cut back once to keep more compact. I am trying this year for the first time Phlox paniculata planted a month ago, which so far is holding up to the heat. Roses do well if I can keep up with the dead heading, the only one to get black spot is a David Austin variety. An old fashioned rose red peony does well while a white one sunburns badly. Keep in mind that it can take several years for some of them to go from a seedling to a mature plant I think the first link will keep yah busy enough until someone comes by and suggest Something pre-grown Yeah it only gets easier after that.... With all the potting mixes and cool container ideas you can see on just about every thread on the forum and then some added lighting. Temps here last week were in the 80s, so everything started really popping up and blooms pooping open. Very nice today too. Worked in the garden this morning wearing shorts and a tank top and my favorite flip-flops. So nice. I let My Girls out for an hour this morning to scratch around and eat bugs and grass. They have begun to lay eggs again and need the new grass to stimulate their egg production. They followed me around, clucking happily and singing their little sighing songs. So cute! The Jane Magnolia tree's flower buds have suddenly begun to swell and there are three flowers beginning to open. I sniffed one and oh, that sweet, one-of-a-kind fragrance! The honeybees and Hummingbird moths are out in droves today supping nectar from the purple Henbit flowers in the grass and visiting all the flowering shrubs. I've even seen butterflies for the past two weeks. Tulips preparing to bloom and hundreds of yellow jonquils, daffodils and purple Muscari Grape Hyacinths are blooming. Hostas and Peonies are poking their noses up through the soft earth and looking good. I could go on and on... The weather radio report yesterday predicts there will be lows in the mid-thirties in the next few days, dropping down into the low-20s on Friday night. Ain't that just DUCKY! If that happens, even if it is just for one night or one hour, I will surely bid a fond but sad farewell to most, if not all, of this year's spring flowers. .I can just kiss the Apricots goodbye...again...for a second year. It will spoil all the new tender growth on the roses and send all the little seedlings popping up in the garden to coldest Purgatory, Glad I didn't set out the Cole crops and onion sets. Unreal

The past two years I've started Nagas indoors in July under shop lights and kept them in the basement. Had to hand pollinate them but got them to ripen peppers between December and February, then cleared out the space to start my summer bedding plants.

This year I kept the best Naga, moving it to a basement windowsill from mid-February until I could harden it up in late May and plant it outdoors. I don't think I'm going to get it to produce peppers outside though -- it is flowering and looking healthy now, but it has no peppers forming yet and nights are going to start getting chilly here in another month.

Anyway, I've posted this pic several times before in other threads, but I'll do it here again -- this is indoor Naga in a 6" pot, started last July, photo taken mid-February 2014:

Don, that is a fake plant. No way is it real. Just too beautiful looking. Looks like a Christmas plant. The green and red is just awesome. I do think I remember that picture from before.

Looks good, Some day I'll have red peppers. I justr have to remeber thre Carly Simon song "Anticipation" "it's making me wait"!

I have some seedlings that sprouted late in pots, but I am not sure they will make it to pods. They may be used for over winters.

We have a long season and I'm willing to turn the laundry room into a nursery for the winter if I need to so I'm starting more Padrons (we just can't get enough of them,) as well as the Peter peppers I never got started this Spring, Jimmy Nardellos if I can find some seeds and I'm on the lookout for Aleppo. I'll probably do more of some of the things we already have, too.

Last week, put a Hungarian pumpkin pepper out to harden off.

Don't have to go to The River, just read the reviews on Amazon. All the 5 star reviews were written before the plants fruited. All the 1 star reviews were written by people who know what a BJ is supposed to look like.

I start new seeds all during the year, but I have a greenhouse to grow all the largest plants in and artificial light to start the small plants inside.
I just started more reaper seeds, but these are the new generation, so they are the IR2s. I also just planted some Jay's peach ghost scorpions. I just started a few 7 pod lava seeds just to play with for myself. In another month or so I'll be starting some Datils, even more reapers, and a bunch of 7 of primos, since they are hotter than the reapers, and lots of people are just wanting the hottest there is.
