Hello Dave, I couldn't heat them to a safe temperature as I only use undersoil heating which wouldn't be sufficient air temperature so I bring them into a centrally heated bedroom which does face south and gets any winter sun. I see all the lovely pictures of everyones flowers time after time and I can't help getting a bit despondent. I keep thinking next year maybe.

So depressing to think that winter is just around the corner and is already creeping in on some. Sorry to hear you've had no blooms this year Hazel. I had none last year and none this year either on my existing plants, but was lucky enough to find and buy three plants locally that had inflos on them. So I have at least had the joy of seeing and smelling a few flowers this year, as well as passing that on to someone else. I gave my Mom the plant with the most buds coming out on the inflo and she has been enjoying flowers now for the past two weeks! I've been equally happy seeing her enjoy them as if I had them myself.

Brush up on your photography over the winter though Hazel. I am certain that you and I will both have wonderful flowers to photograph and share here next season!

hello, Hazel, sorry to hear that you have no flowers this year. perhaps adding artificial lighting in your designated area would get them to bloom inside. i will be having the same situation because in canada we don't get too much sun in the winter either and what we do get is not that intense. the weather here is becoming colder already and the prediction is a colder winter this year. good luck.

Hello Sue, I don't think any artificial lighting would be an option indoors as I'm already in trouble for bringing them in anyway. Do you use any extra lighting where you live? I understand Canada is very beautiful but can endure very cold winters. Isn't it strange how we long to grow tropicals in such adverse conditions?

hello, Hazel, last winter, I had put most of my orchids in the basement and I used florescent grow tubes which did not increase my electiricity bill much. in one small area of my kitchen i used a grow bulb above the seed tray in which i was trying to start some veggies. the rest of the plants were scattered around the house. i had moved everything into the house from the sunroom because we had a very cold spell and the heater in the sunroom was running nonstop. this winter, i think i am going to insulate the windows with plastic film in the sunroom and use another type of heater. if it does not work well i will move everything into the house again. i had not started growing plumies until march of this year so i have yet to find out how to handle those. it was challenging because i was constantly monitoring the temperature in the sunroom. England has so much history and beautiful architecture. it is one of the places on my list to visit.

Hi Hazel and others, it certainly has been a summer to remember here hasn't it, but for all the wrong reasons? What with all those floods, its been constantly cold, cloudy, dull wet and windy etc etc. The month of April was lovely, really warm and the first week of August too, apart from that its been dreadful. Today its only around 13 degrees here, brrrrrr.
My plumie (Celadine) is hopeless, having produced only a few mid sized leaves and of course no sign whatsoever of flowers, a real disappointment. sniff-sniff.
My 4 seedlings from Lauri's seeds are still leafy and are looking good, almost overtaking Celadine in the growth stakes, I hope they overwinter ok.
However, I have found some solace in looking at all the lovely pics posted on here by our more fortunate members, but I have turned a very fetching shade of green, with envy...would far rather have turned a nice brown with the sun though.
Better luck next year eh Hazel, it can't possibly be any worse....or can it??

Hello Gill, Glad your seedlings are doing well. Some good news too, the pink window sill has returned to white after ages and Jim never noticed so I've still got my head! I've also been given the first yellow geranium - very pretty.
Are you going to the Kings Heath show tomorrow? There won't be any plumerias but there will be other gems.

Hello Susan, We are unable both to ship plants or to receive plants to anyone outside of the E.U. unless we have an import/export license also phytosanitary certificates to say the plants have been inspected for pests and deseases. This is to prevent the cross infection to other countries. The costs to obtain these make it unrealistic to an ordinary buyer such as ourselves. This is why it is so very tantalising to see very cheap plumerias for sale overseas such as Hawaii,Thailand etc. because if we were caught out at customs it would be a very hefty fine and the plants confiscated.Hope this explains why it's not worth the risk and also we need to keep harmful pests and deseases at bay.

Hello Susan, When I bought my plumeria plant from Madeira which belongs to Portugal and so is classed as E.U. I still couldn't bring the soil in and I had to leave the soil in the hotel rubbish bins and wrap the bareroots in some moist paper. I'm pleased to say it is thriving at home. If we import from the E.U. they can only send barerooted plants to us unless you are a big importing nursery. This is in case there are bugs or diseases even in the soil.

Yes, it's really Autumnal here now isn't it? Everywhere was wet through with a heavy dew this morning and our robin is sitting on the bird-bath singing away, that's always a sign that its getting cooler. We have had some real chilly days, not to mention nights of late.
Will soon be time for our plumies to rest, hopefully for better things next year?
