I've always used standard propagation flats for my seed germination (flats with drainage holes), then transplant them into cell packs also nested into the same kind of flats. I seed three or four hundred bedding plants (all kinds) into a couple of the flats, which are equipped with heating cables. Transplanted into cell packs, that's a manageable 10 to 12 flats full of plants. I use cell pack sizes of 36 or 48 cells per sheet. These past couple of years, all I can handle are 3 to 4 hundred plants. I never water from the bottom but use a misting nozzle for the seed flats and a regular gentle nozzle for the transplants. Even seedlings and bedding plants appreciate fresh, oxygenated water moving through the root system. I reuse both the flats and the cell pack units over and over, storing them clean and dry out of the sun. Here is a link that might be useful: flats and cell packs

My preference is as follows... If you can dig up the sod, Donn's method. If you can't dig up the sod, lasagna the place. I will usually let the lasagna sit for a season though and you won't have the time. I wanted to put a garden along the ditch on our front lawn in this space around the birch... ... and here it is a couple of weeks later with Buddleias and winter sown newbies last year in late August I think. You should see everything filling in this year. You won't kill all the sod which you turn over but if you are diligent about weeding it once a week the task becomes less tedious. Now I can go by a couple of weeks without seeing any weeds resurface from the old lawn. The soil is really beautiful. I make lagnas in areas where we've cleared the brush - too many roots for me to start dealiing with it.

Squircle!! I laughed because I still use my old Corning Ware with the blue cornflowers on the sides! My daughter keeps saying that I should get rid of them because they are so old. I tell her, "I am old too. Do you want to get rid of me?" I should give all my kitchen stuff to charity when I die, because she will get rid of it anyway. I will roll over in my grave when she throws my Ankarsrum mixer or my Breville Peel and Dice out. Maybe, I should be buried with them.... I love my stainless steel rolling pin that my father-in-law made for his mother-in-law. (My husband's grandmother) But, my husband loaded the dishwasher one night, and he put the rolling pin in the dishwasher. No more shiny! He did the same thing to my meat mallet. Biscuit and doughnut cutters are still shiny though. Used a Corning Ware dish tonight to make 4 rolls. Lars, your lasagna looks better than the one I made the other day. Mine was really flat and green. Not pretty at all, but it is probably one of the best recipes I have ever made.
