Silly question about the leaves at night....

Hello Everyone!!!

I have noticed in the past, but it really caught my attention tonight about how and why the leaves of the Plumerias draw upwards during the evening?

Is it because they protect themselves from the change in temps at night? One of my trees (Scott Pratt) seems to be like that during the day...and all of my other trees seem to all draw upwards for the evening...almost like pulling the drapes closed!!!

Does anyone else have this happen? Is it normal for Plumerias? Does it protect the inflos from other elements?

Just wondering why...I know that it sounds like a silly question...but I know this is the only place that someone else may have had the same experience!!!

It's called photonasty and many plants do it. I'm not sure of the reason.

Blackberries will tolerate a lot of abuse. Container growing of blackberries is not recommended, but is worth a try if you have no other options. It's just that it is hard to get a support system or trellis going in a container situation. You can prune the plant severely and simply accept the resulting smallish crop of berries. Upright varieties would be best suited for containers. Blackberries stain, do not have the container over wood or cement surfaces during fruiting. Nurseries ship them in the fall because they can, and in the case of blackberries, it works out OK.

Another 'silly' question about rose leaves?

I remove the leaves in the spring, and as karl rightly notes, they usually get pushed off by the rose. I also make a point to not leave them on the ground near the bush. If you suffered a black spot infection on that rose the previous year there's decent reason to suspect the old leaves may be harboring remnant bits of the fungus, which can successfully overwinter in infected leaves. I believe I've read the fungus will push out spores from dried up dead leaves on the ground near the bush and those spores can get spattered up on the rose's new growth during rain storms.

I find that roses with more substantial petals (like perhaps the HT Dream Come True) will last as well in the vase or even longer than on the plant, if kept cool. Roses can drop petals more quickly in dry or hot weather, and cutting them can help, or even refrigerating them like exhibitors do. On the other hand, there are roses like some of the David Austin multipetal fluffy roses that are desperately fast to drop their petals when cut, so they're better enjoyed in the yard. And no, it's not remotely a silly question. We're all rose fanatics here and want to enjoy the blooms as long as possible. We can totally relate... Cynthia

Maybe gas exchange through the stomata on the undersides is facilitated?
