Plumeria cutting newbie question

I am about 5-6 weeks in the rooting process. I started the plant outdoors in partial shade, but after a week we had some torrential rain so I brought it in and used a grow light up until now. I now have 3 leaves sprouting, about an inch long each, and 1 or 2 more just starting. We are now out of the rainy weather, but now the temps are in the 100s here. I live in an apartment with a balcony that has areas of both full shade and full sun. I would like to move the cutting outdoors now, but with having such high temps this week i'm worried it will be too much for it. I was wondering if I could move it into the shady area and gradually move it towards the sun as it cools down (the shady area has some protection from any spotty showers that may pop up), or should I wait until the cutting is further along to move it outdoors?

In my opinion, outdoor heat, humidity and air circulation are best this time of year for rooting plumeria where you are. If you can let it get sun all morning then shelter in the afternoon that would be optimal. In that kind of heat the occasional bit of rain shouldn't hurt it, either, as long as it's not sitting in soggy soil.

Most of my cuttings get several hours of blistering sun--morning to early afternoon--and a few have sunburned stems, but that won't stop a cutting from rooting if it's meant to root. Just my opinion. You can protect the stems with cardboard tubes from paper towel or t.p. rolls, too, if you're worried about stem burn. Good luck.

I agree with Jennifer. They can take a lot of sun! I have seen them growing in Mexico, where they get little water and a.lot of heat, in addition a lot of sun reflecting off of the ocean onto the plants. They do fine. They may have a bit of salt burn and sun burn on the leaves, but they love the heat! So. California's weather was the high 90's the last 2 weeks, and that is when my plumerias really started to grow! Hello everyone ! I am new to this forum as well as new to growing plumeria (... didn't realize that this is addicting). Just came from Hawaii vacation 3 months ago and got interest on plumerias. I brought home 2 cuttings first then bought 4 and 1 more coming (it's true, one is not enough..). All of them are growing now and thanks for all the information you shared in this forum. I have a question regarding the "ID". As I'm reading the threads, some members are asking what's the ID of their plumeria and I got confused. When I bought my plumerias in Hawaii (HNL airport)the label says Yellow, Red and the others I bought online are Pink and White. I also have "hybrids (?)" because they have a name ? like Violet Princess, Penang Peach,Orange Punch. So the YRPW colors I have has a name and to be IDd when they bloom ? Or they are just plain Yellow, Red,Pink and White. Please help, need info on this. Thanks !

newbie - need advise on growing plumeria cutting in pot

Well, I finally put Plumeria cutting in pot. I used following soil mixture: 60% Cactus Mix 40% Perlite pea size pabble stones at top Cutting size: about 6-8" and 1" diameter I put the mix in 1G pot, soaked it in water and drained and then planted Plumeria cutting in it. I have a question: Now (only from today)that weather is getting warmer in bay area (N. CA), should I be keeping it in SUN during daytime at all? I heard somewhere that you need to keep this pot in shade for first 2 weeks. And, then start putting it under sun during daytime. Is this right? Plumies need a minimum of 6 hours of direct sun a day and need to avoid cold. They thrive in humid conditions with warm day and nights above 60. Plumies do not like to have constant wet feet and are native to islands that have downpours and then long, dry periods but have humid air. Taking this in mind, your orchids like more wetness so just keep the soil of the plumies in a drench and dry routine and meet the other needs and all is ok. Your plumies will have leaves go yellow and drop off in late fall and then they require no watering until spring when they come out of dormancy. Your humid environment will keep the soil moist enough and keep temps above 40 if possible. Bill

I would start it off in part shade for the first day or 2 and gradually put it in a bit more sun. Plumerias can handle a TON of sun, even when they come outside from being indoors, but I have gotten burn on some of the stems of my plumerias from bringing them from inside where they got no sun to outside where they got full sun. They are strong plants though!
