magnesium deficiency?

For the last year or so I've been growing some canary island date palms and queen palms in containers here in sunny Minnesota. The queen palms in particular are growing much more slowly than I'd anticipate -- even with significant supplemental light. The leaves also look very light green, and I'm wondering if I've got a magnesium deficiency (since magnesium is required to form the chlorophyll porphyrin ring).

Here are two photos of the same plant with different lighting (to try to show the very light center-area of the leaf):

Also, my canary island date palm is showing some oddness near its leaf tips. Both palms were planted at the same time in the same media, so I'm not sure if the problem is related or not -- it doesn't look particularly related, but I'm not very experienced with palms.

If any of this looks familiar to anyone, I'd appreciate the benefit of your experience.

Thanks,

Jon
