Central Texas plumeria meet-up

We'll be meeting this Sunday, August 4th, at 10:30am at the San Marcos outlet mall food court for some plumeria swappin' and talkin'.

Come join us if you're in the Austin to San Antonio area! Kms2, Honeybunny, elucas and a couple of other folks will be there and we'd love to make new plumeria friends.

I will have to try and make this! It is a little ways from us but not too bad. Do you have any idea what cuttings/ plants will be available?

Hello Tina, your new mix should be fine for a couple of weeks I would think. Sorry I can't help you with regard to the fertilisers you mention as I am not familiar with those brands being from 'over the pond'! The same applies to how often you should water them as my climate is so different. However, even here I can water them at least every other day during the summer as it's surprising how much water they will use in a fast draining mix as others have pointed out. I fertilise once a week spring to autumn. As for trimming roots above the soil...I do this when I raise the caudex each spring, but mainly they are those thin feeder roots that will dry out anyway when exposed. I have also been known to trim those slightly thicker ones as well, say just under pencil thickness if they have been sprouting randomly from the really chunky ones. As long as there's plenty of feeder roots left below, you are fine. The roots/caudex/leaves will bleed clear irritant sap so beware. Can you post a picture, it will make it better for us to help you maybe? Gill from the UK.

Howdy from Belton in Central Texas. It's time to put on your happy face. This Saturday is our Fall Plant Swap. We'll be meeting at the most awesome site... the Bell County Master Gardner Greenhouse - behind the classroom. This is next door to the Scott & White Clinic. Providing that you bring a chair, we'll be sitting behind the classroom and using their tables for our plants. Many Master Gardeners will also be coming, so bring your gardening questions at the same time. This is a pot luck plant swap... so bring whatever you have. Please bring rooted plants and label them to the best of your ability so you know what you're trading. You'll be the expert on that plant since it grows in your own yard. You'll be sharing that information with others there. If you don't have any plants, don't let that stop you... bring some good potting soil, pots, seeds, tools and anything else that would cause a gardener to want to trade a plant for you item. You'll probably go home with more than you came with... it's just the gardener's nature to want to share. For those of you who use Gardenweb.com, you know it's all free. For those of you who aren't familiar with this site, you'll want to spend some time wandering through it. If you want to continue the visiting through lunch, bring something to add to the table: casserole, dessert, drinks, napkins, and so forth. Bring your good books on plants for Central Texas so everyone can look through them. We'll start setting up at 8:30am and probably start winding down around 1:30pm. By all means, bring a friend or kids. We'll have access to see the Demonstration Vegetable Garden and check out the Master Gardener's Greenhouse while you are there. You'll want to plan on coming back on October 21st to the Fall Plant Sale if you see something you want. If you post your name here, others might want to arrange a trade with you ahead of time. Once you come the first time, you'll want to come back for the next one. Watch out... you might make a friend! Time is short so get busy potting up those plants. By all means, please pass this email on to your other friends. If they'll write me back, we'll get them on a database so they'll get future invitations. Six of us made it plus two little ones (Jandy Jr. and KMS Jr.). Jandy, elucas, Barbra, Sirkeith and wife, and me. Barbra and I rode together. Its great to have her along and not just because she brings her front row parking permit. :) Jandy JR and KMS JR found the ubiquitous nursery cat and made sure she got lots of attention and probaby a few grapes and cheeseballs too. They had not brought their in ground Plumerias back out but still had them in an obscure corner of a storage/greenhouse which it wasnt intended for us to be in but we were on a mission and won't be denied. They were just sitting on cardboard bare root. I was surprised to see that they just pull them out of the ground and left the leaves which IMO would dehydrate them (which they were). There were also about a dozen JJ 5 gallon plumerias still there. Most were the "premium X" or had the labels missing but there was one Mini Devine with 8 tips and 2 starting inflos (went home with Keith) and a very thick Southern Cross with six tips and a Thumbilina with 6 or 7 tips (both went with me). Barbra made sure I got some sort of discount for buying two plants. Jandy also gave me a two tip ETLD so now the correct answer on her Seedling Challenge is 30. She also gave me a very healthy Moragne #78 (Kelly I think). Also some Pride of Barbados Seeds. I went there with a box of cuttings and gladly departed with it empty to fill it up again as I pull mine out of the greenhouse and prune for shape. Everyone left with multiple cuttings of Rose Red, JL Penang Peach, Dean Conklin, JL Candystripe, JL Lei Rainbow, Aztec Gold, Jeannie Moragne Jr, NOID white Pinwheel, Celadine, and Giveaway Pink. Most of those cuttings were taken this weekend so please let them callus over. If you are not sure if its ready let me know. Thanks to Jandy for organizing (again) and for everyone who made it out there. I enjoyed it and look forward to the next meeting.

I did get this old school classic, Lei Rainbow, couldn't help myself Can't remember the name of this one, I think it was just a white pink rainbow Here are a few more I believe this was an Amarron's Curly White seedling Magnum Opus It was a really good sale, lots of fun. I also picked up a Thai Orange. No inflo, but I should have taken a pic of the mother tree. I did find a pic at FloridaColors.com - this is their pic, not mine, as they sell cuttings of this beauty. Florida Colors pic: This was a beauty. Couldn't decide between Thai Orange and Lei Rainbow, so I got both. But that's all I got for me, which was truly an exercise in discipline!

The golf tournament planned for this weekend was cancelled. I'll have to talk to the boss and maybe we can make it from Ft. Worth to San Marcus Sunday.

Sounds good, Lonnie. You'll love everyone there, and K will happy to have another guy around, LOL. Besides, there's always good shopping to be done by the boss in San Marcos afterward.

Texasplum, don't get too excited, it's still a small group! Most of us usually have some extra seedlings and cuttings we bring, stuff other than plumeria, too. I'll have some desert rose seedlings and mountain laurel, and maybe one Gladys O'Neal plumeria seedling spare.

I've managed to spread the love around to friends, coworkers and their parents here in Austin, so I have fewer for this meeting than I did last month. All part of my evil plan to get everyone else hooked ;-)

If Lynn and Laura made one of these meetings, we'd need an extra 24 hours of talk time! Seriously, I always leave after a few hours and still have more things I wanted to ask or talk about!

Jen, I'm sorry, but I could not make it, I was stuck in Rockport I just got home. We were going to leave yesterday morning about 11am. We got a call around 8am that water was coming out of our garage. Nothing was packed, sheets were washing. I told Gary just go, I will get a ride home. He took his bag and left. We had a leak in our kitchen. We just had it fixed on Monday, the plumbing company came back yesterday and fixed it for no charge. Thank goodness, I was able to get a ride home today, or I would have had to stay there until next Friday. Barbra

Oh, yeah, K showed up with a bag full of blooms to sniff and compare. They were wonderful, showed us what we're working towards! Also may have helped me ID a NOID I have.

Had a great time, everyone--thanks again to all for driving so far, and for the lovely plants! Marc, if you're around, it was great to finally see you in person.

Barb, I sent yours home with K. We missed you! Hope the leak was well fixed.

It was so great to see you guys, especially since I can't post on here as much lately I'm missing out! (my company upgraded their security or something & now I can read but not post - HMPH!)

It was so cool to see all those blooms! Quite a nice bunch there to see all at one time and talk about. It is such a treat to be able to trade plants and talk talk talk plants even if the people in the food court think we're crazy! haha!

I can't complain at all, actually the food court is the closest to my house so THANK YOU ALL for driving so far! You guys are awesome, thanks for the plants!

Barbara, you were certainly missed and I'm so sorry you had a water leak to deal with a second time around, as if once isn't plenty! Hope to see you next time.
