Question about weeds in Praire field

My 6 acre praire is into its fourth summer. Every year it seams a different weed takes over the field. The first year the field was covered with giant ragweed. The second year it was covered with red and white clover. Last year all I could see was thistles. Now this summer the entire field is covered in Canadian goldenrod.

I haven't burned it yet and am thinking about burning in November. Will burning get rid of allot of the unwanted weeds? My prairie is in a crp program so I have to follow the required mowing times. Will the big and little blue prairie grass which is doing well finally push allot of these weeds out? What else can I do to suppress the weeds?

If I use something like weed-be-gone will it harm the prairie grass? Thanks for any info.

what county are u in?

certainly the NRCS guy/gal will go out there to check it out.

and ur prairie sounds like its doing what alot of prairies start out like. 1st yr = ragweed = annual. 2nd yr = clovers from seedbank or existing that bairly grew the first year after prepwork but u didnt see them cuz they put on roots and hardly any shoots. 3rd yr comes back of the perenials that u didnt get with ur prepwork and then comes the tall and strong can. goldenrod that shades out the weak clovers and annuals.

as to helping u out, i think i will let the NRCS ppl do what they feel. its kinda theirs now that u have a contract and who am i to get into the way of the us gov. after u talk to them and they give u the ok to do some kinda of specialized weed management, let me know and we can talk then.

you definitely need to burn - work with your NRCS office - they will have contacts on who to work with to get your area burned. what area of WI are you in? you may be able to contact a local pheasants forever habitat specialist to assess your weed control and help you burn your prairie... once it gets established an occaisional burn is the only thing you will need to do - i believe a burn will suffice for the CRP program in lieu of mowing (of course check with NRCS first) ... unfortunately burning isnt going to inhibit goldenrod but it does inhibit other weeds and stimulates the bluestems and other grasses and flowers which will fill in thus making it harder for the weeds to grow. mowing until then helps keep weeds from going to seed ... check out the results the following year after a burn and then look at other options like 24D or roundup selected areas only if the burning is not effective.

and yes - its very typical to notice the cyclacle pattern of your weed development... each year a different species is more prevelant than the previous year - very common situation...

Thanks for your reply. However, your psychic senses are wrong. I do tend to analyze things, especially when it's regarding a new endeavor/field I have no prior knowledge/experience of. It has yielded outstanding results for me in the past and so I continue to approach things in this manner. Regarding seeding too late - well, first off, I just took possession of the house so I couldn't seed earlier. Also, I live in Edmonton, Alberta Canada and if you've ever lived here, you would know that our summer is pretty much about 2 weeks long. lol Anyway, When I did the overseeding, it was about beginning of June and temperatures were about 10 C - 20 C and we've been getting a lot of rain lately. In fact, we're just starting to go up to highs of 20 C - 25 C and in about 5 days is the first day we're supposed to hit 29 C, as per the forecast. I know that Spring and Fall are the textbook times to overseed but our weather/termperatures here does not conform to the norm. Our temperatures in October are already winter temperatures for a lot of places in the States. Also, I did not want to wait until fall because I wanted to get started on thickening the lawn asap. I was confused with this statement though: "But you are just now coming into spring...and fall is just around the corner." Spring is technically done..did you mean, "just coming into summer"? I usually mow at around 4 -5 inches and only take a bit off. I know all about the "only take 1/3 off" and "mow high" recommendations. I only scalped it this one time to prepare for overseeding to facilitate better seed to soil contact. I've read about the roller thing but decided that it wasn't needed. I did not want to compact things any more either especially since I was core aerating. I ran my rake through the soil and seeds to enhance seed to soil contact and this is a technique that has been recommended in several articles and videos. I also did not want to bury the seeds too deep. In fact, I already have baby grass growing to about heights of 2 inches now. I only noticed them yesterday and they are even much taller today. I like your idea of sowing KBG first, then fescue then PRG but here's the thing - I have not found any stand alone seed packages in my local Walmart/Home Depot/Canadian Tire stores. They are all blends. I haven't gone to garden centers though but that's also because I do not want to pay more for something that sells less at Home Depot. Also, I think this says something.. I think that for our climate and grass types, the seed blends probably tend to work better. I think this is evidenced by the fact that I primarily see Scotts Sun and Shade being sold in all these places and not the other types - i.e. high traffic, high heat etc.. Also, this blend tends to get the best reviews on Canadian Tire.com. The other thing too is that I've read blends were made so that the PRG can germinate first and help establish the turf while the fescue and KBG are taking their sweet time to germinate - helps with thickening up lawn quicker and crowding out weeds. If I wanted to wait (or had the luxury to do so - i.e. lawn isn't too bare) the full 21-28 days, then I would probably just seed with pure KBG and not worry about blends. I've decided to wait with the dandelions. I've emailed Scotts and they said to wait after mowing the new grass 3 times before using Killex as it destroys grass seed and new grass. Just wondering why you say spot spraying is far better than broadcast anything. I just feel that if Killex is safe to use on an established lawn, it would be more efficient to just broadcast it, in terms of time and coverage. Regarding my neighbor's lawn - I'm not worried that her lawn looks like crap..I just feel that her dandelions are invading my lawn and I can see that most of the dandelions on my lawn are on the side close to hers. Anyway, I'm just gonna keep mowing high and hopefully it gets thick enough to crowd out weeds and hopefull I won't have too many dandelions and I'll just deal with them as they come.

There are two kinds of grass. One spreads out like a carpet (sod forming) while the other kind forms individual plants (bunch grass) which slowly enlarge themselves. Fescue and rye grasses are bunch grasses. Kentucky bluegrass, zoysia, bermuda, St Augustine, and centipede are sod forming grasses. There are other grasses but these are the normal turf grasses. If your grass has not filled in since killing out the weeds, then you do not have any sod forming grasses. It is likely you have mostly fescue. Fescue makes a great lawn, and some of the varieties flourish in shady areas. The only drawback is you have to reseed every fall if you lose some grass in the spring or summer. This would be a good time to learn how to do that. In NH, now is the time to start. Here are the general steps. 1. Kill the weeds and rake them out. 2. Mow the grass low 3. Scatter seed 4. Water 3x per day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) for only 10 minutes. Continue that watering for 3 weeks and until you have about 80% of the new seed sprouted. 5. Mow when the grass is 5 inches high. Mow it back to 4 inches until the new grass is established. Then pick your favorite height from 3 inches to 4 inches. There's a little more to it, but not much.

Don't use roundup,. It's expensive and it will kill everything it touches so you can't use it in your lawn or you'll have a dead area. I have not read all of the above threads but the best bindweed killer is AMINE. I believe the recipe is 6 tablespoons to a gallon of water in a sprayer but I could be slightly off. Just read the directions. This will kill the plant all the way to the root. Unless this is a brand new plant growing from seed, you cannot pull bindweed and get it all. It'll just keep getting stronger and stronger every time it grows back. Use Amine and it will take care of the problem. You can use it in your lawn and it will not harm the grass. It will harm other leafy plants, so wrap a plastic bag or newspaper or other barrier around the good plant to protect it and give the bindweed a good soaking with amine. It'll start dying pretty quickly. Just give it time to completely die and don't pull it up too soon or you'll stop the process and the root will start growing again. Please understand seeds can lay dormant in the ground for twenty years some times so you'll continue to have bindweed, but like I said at the beginning - in the spring when the seeds first sprout you can pull them and they won't come back. Only the established plants need AMINE. I live on a hill and face the foothills of Colorado and between me and them are miles and miles of wild fields filled with weeds and weed seeds so new ones blow in all the time. This spring I went out and found a patch of Canadian Thistle in my rock garden, where I have not had thistle for many years. I used AMINE - 1/3 cup to 1 1/2 gallons of water and the thistles have not returned. That was in May, it is now July.. Other things are sprouting in that area, so the ground has not been hurt. I just bought a jug of Amine at Paulino Gardens in Denver and it was around $45 but that is enough for several years. I've seen it on the internet in smaller containers but after you pay for shipping you might as well just go to the garden shop and get a big jug.

i was writing an answer last night when the power went off in the storm... i find that aggressive mowing keeps everything at bay, at best. and frankly, when is the last weed that u saw eliminated by mowing? ur only prolonging the enevitable and setting back the good guys. i dont like to see someone start over either. and unless u are willing to chemically mow for many years, i dont see how starting over helps. i know of only one sure way of elimination of CG and many other nasties, roundup ready farm rotation over about 8+years. so unless u are willing to buy a combine, i think its a management issue and not a redo. burning doesnt help, mowing doesnt help, chemicals are too broadspectrum, pulling would lead to a divorce...so what is left? time. i think ur only weapon is timing of specific management of that plant. its a late season grower. that is the target time for weedwacking/spraying double punch. 24d will take out all forbs but leaves the grasses. so u wait until about 1/10'th of the CG is in flower and u cut the area. CG and many other aggressives will come back out after a few weeks(sadly so will some good guys) and that is when u 24d em. then a fall burn to clean things up. after a few years, u can start adding forbs after the fall burn. will it completely rid urself of GC, nope. but ur choices are few and ugly. also, i find the plants that come up after a mowing are the cheapest and most aggressive ones @ the seed nursery. funny how that works... by the way, notice how no one said, 'oh just leave it. the finches need food bla bla...'. which is a perfectly viable option. the time, toxins, machines, pollutions, mental energy, neighbors satisfied look as u mow down that 'ugly weedfield'. vs. pina colada sitting on the arm of the leopold bench as u watch the finches eat the weed and now YOU have the satisfied look on ur face whilst the neighbor looks over at ur weed field in disgust. toss up froggy

The best way to control the large goldenrods (Canada and tall goldenrod) is to mow off the entire prairie at about 4-6 inches once in late June or July. This single mowing really stresses the goldenrod, which grows quickly in May and June on carbohydrates stored in the roots. By mowing after the plants first get to three or four feet in early to mid summer, the goldenrods don't have much energy left to grow back. The prairie plants can easily withstand this mowing, as they are adapted to being grazed off.

But CRP regs may intervene in this important management technique. Mowing in August or September or later will have no effect. The plant will have already stored plenty of carbohydrates in its roots for regrowth. Mow off the plant just after it has used root reserves to get growing.

We have 63 acres in CRP in SW Wisconsin for about 20 years. We are not allowed to mow before July 1st to protect nesting birds. We do mow to control weeds. Thistle was quite bad for a few years but is under control now, so the mowing does have a positive effect over time. We have never burned. Goldenrod is our biggest problem now in areas where we have planted trees. It is a perennial plant with rhizomonous root growth so mowing does not seem as effective. The solution is herbicide, or plow and replant, but when you have a contract you have to follow their rules. They should have some suggestions for you and often will subsidize, or cost share. Depends on your contract.

i thought plowing worsens goldenrod because it is rhizmatous and cutting the roots can double the plants...?
i understand that goldenrod is probably one of the hardest to control in an established planting because - it is native and the things we do to stimulate native growth also stimulates goldenrod... what mix was your CRP planted in... some of the older crp plantings were not native grasses and wildflowers. if you have never burned you may want to consider it - burning really does stimulate the bluestem which is the best competition to help control the goldenrod ... you will never be rid of goldenrod,which is fine - but you also dont want a whole field of it.
my brother is the habitat specialist for pheasants forever in southwest wisconsin... he works with property owners who have CRP and coordinates with the NRCS to help manage native plantings to enhance wildlife ... he may be able to help you set up a burn or get a one time variance on a contract to do an early mow to control a specific aggressive species...
