Potager Gardens

And, 3 years later...

All beds are done. Not all are double dug yet but all have been outlined with rock. When we finally decided upon this spot for the potager, we went with rocks for lining new beds due to cost factors. Most rocks were harvested by going up the hill behind our house with the wheelbarrow and collecting them. Or, any time I took a walk, my policy was to always bring a rock down with me. There have been set backs. The first year progress was halted when my then 9-year-old was diagnosed with diabetes. Then last year, we discovered too late that the horse manuer we amended with was contaminated with an herbicide. The deer also found us. But now everything is in its place and I can focus on the plants and soil more. As you can tell in the pictures, there is a lot of work to be done, grass to be pulled and things to be put away. But, here are the pictures of my potager:

I hope to make the area behind the tree a secret garden/get-away.

These three round beds were an extension. We wanted round to balance out all of the rectangular beds.

The four beds that frame the center are shaped like this.

What an incredible project you have done. It is a beautiful layout, and must have been so much hard work to accomplish.

WOW! Wonderful layout! Your garden beds are going to be awesome when you have them planted! The time and energy it took you to create your garden was definetly worth it. What do you have planted in your walls of water? Keep posting pics throughout the growing season, I cant wait to see them! Valree

Would need to know the name of the chemical used or at least what the primary ingredients were in it. If it was used per package directions then the packing should tell you how soon it is safe to plant there. Some dissipate rather quickly while others can remain in the soil for years and root crops would be the most likely affected. This, of course, is in addition to any of the oleander's glycosides which may remain in the soil I don't know if specific testing is available for glycosides but it would be worth checking into. You might want to post over on the Soil Forum here for additional input but without the name of the chemical used it will be hard to say one way or another. Personally, I would use the area for a flower bed rather than as a food plot and grow the food crop somewhere else. If the flowers don't survive in the area then you will know that there is residue from the root killer still there. JMO Dave

LOL Ya'll are funny. I got so many comments on my bad photo taking I took it off to retake them. So I'll post pics here: I suppose I should have typed between pics....what you're seeing is the master bath :P I took a close up of the glass to show how cool it is :) We had it made for us so no one has glass like it. It's super thick and while in the big pics you see inside the cabs due to use of flash, you really can't see into it (as you see in the glass only pic). It's really just another texture. The room inspiration was my collection of medievil manuscript pages. The "art" is dated between 1350 and 1700. The majority is mid 1400. I love the soft coffe stained tones you get with antique papers. The cabs might appear black, but they're actually a rich chocolate cherry, just like the croc tile. The cabinets are Omega custom. Since they do whatever you ask for, the design was whatever I wanted LOL I went with 27" deep lowers and then it has the little jut out. The cabs have pull out drawers inside for my daily routine. I also have the little pullouts for toothpaste, soap etc., as well as toe kick drawers, tip outs, blah blah...every inch of space is used LOL People always ask about the tub...you can easily get into it by stepping up on the step, sitting down backwards (bumm on deck) and swinging your legs over to drop down into the seat that is inside. We did plan on a bigger step (one that flipped out) and we planned on using grab bars, but really they're not necessary. Frankly the tub (while it calls out for nekkid adults and good wine) is most often occupied by our 3 year old. He loves having water to his neck (he's not left alone in there obviously) and the bubbles that the air jets make. Not to mention that the water is recirculated into a warmer so it never gets cold...again not that I'd know...but given his two hour splash session...I'm guessing it works for him :) Oh and it's NOT dark in the room. The shower has it's own light inside. The room is quite well lit and gets so much sunshine that I took the pictures late at night to get them without too much shine (which made people think the room is dark). We sit on the edge of a lake and have huge windows everywhere so the room is constantly light and bright. Our wall finish was done by an artist to mimic the travertine feel, but not be specific.

Thanks for sharing too! Our Bosch oven is similar on the timer and it is taking me a while to get the hang of that. Our Bosch 36" induction cooktop is also larger than a standard 36" cabinet and we had to upgrade on that as well. One of the quirky things about induction is that you keep turning it up because it doesn't seem to be heating visually than end up turning it way down for the simmer. Still getting used to ours after 6 months.

You are responsible. Interior wood like fir isn't "treated" for termites. Only exterior framing wood gets the copper treatment. Occasionally interior framing wood is treated with borates, but beauty wood isn't done that way or it alters what it looks like. The source of the issue wasn't the veneer. But, it will certainly act as their food, as will any wood. You also need to have someone do some crawling around and find out their point of infiltration. They may be coming in from another unit. Probably the whole building will need to be inspected and treated.

Macgregor--Thank you. I have certainly referred to the pictures of your garden more than once for inspiration.

Valree--I have tomatoes and eggplants in the WOW. I am experimenting to see if they are worth it. Right now I think they are for the cherry tomatoes but may be less worth it for paste tomatoes. Thank you for your kind words.

Nancyjane--We did have gophers. The neighbors cat takes care of them on one side of the fence and on my property we usually use bait. Still, when double digging the beds, we have used wire for perennial things like asparagus. I have a rugosa rosa in this garden area that is in a wire cage and anything else perennial (like the berry vines I will purchase) will be placed in wire cages as well. However, the gophers tend to be more active on the other side of the house too. Soon, we may be electrifying the fence for the deer.

What a beautiful potager! I can imagine how much hard work went into that, but the end result is very impressive. The stone is especially nice and is permanent too. I can't wait to see your potager in a couple of months when it is overflowing with bounty! :)

How did you get rid of the herbicide? I don't have it, but have wondered what I'd do if it came in the straw or manures I get for the garden here. Our few chickens, ducks, and rabbits we have nowadays don't produce enough for our big garden areas, so I add other manures when I can get them from a few sources I have used over the years. I always ask about what they're feeding to try to avoid the herbicides.

Corrine, It will leach out eventually and it can break down but just takes time. I do not grow the sensitive crops in those beds yet. I put some worms into the beds from my worm bins so that they can hopefully help process it quicker. I also keep adding more compost and I try to water it as much as feasible. I think the dryness of my climate probably makes it more difficult for it to break down.

Now before putting manure on from an outside source I test it. I had a big pile of horse manure sitting around from the neighbors and before using it I mixed it with potting soil and grew peas to see if they were affected. They grew fine so I knew it was safe. Also, because of my low rainfall, my plan is to only apply heavy amounts of manure every 3 years to prevent salts from building up. The chicken stuff will of course get mixed into the regular compost, but this year I only have 4 chicks so I do not anticipate an abundance for a while.
