the 22nd of December is right around the corner and that means the days get longer again WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!...lol

It is nice, although I guess it will be about 18 days until their is another day with this much light (lol). I've been using artificial light more liberally this winter. I have seen a big diffirence too.

This morning I found several drops of honeydew on the areolar glands of 2 of the pads, and I have been keeping the soil slightly moist for a while, so this could perhaps be an indication the pads are progressing! Also, I have this amazing little M. matanzanus that is a real trooper! I had it out in my garage overnight with some of my other cacti, and I found it quite pale in the morning. Funny, it wasn't shrunken at all like my Ferocactus and E. grusonii were! Within 24 hours, it healed up and looks just as healthy as before! After I saw this, I checked what the low was supposed to be that night, and it was 43 degrees! That had me quite worried right there. I know they are supposed to be kept above 64 F at all times, but this surprised me! I've heard the younger specimens are more tolerant of cold than the older ones. I am making sure it doesn't happen again!

Sounds terrific blue! Your excitement is contagious! I am having heck with a pair of nasy HOSP's here and have already emptied out 3 partial nests. I am eager to set up a trap box using the Van Ert trap soon. My Bluebirds seem to have settled upon their nestbox, and I went ahead and placed the Spooker there to keep the HOSP's away from it. No nesting materials inside yet. I just checked yesterday. It'll be soon though. I can feel it!

Thanks for the reminder Raven. Our PBS channel is showing "The Secrets of Highclere Castle" at 8 tonight, followed by Masterpiece Classic. The show "examines "life in Britain during the Edwardian age for both the titled class and servants. Included: the concept of the entail which passed estates to the next generation; the influence of American wealth on the Britith aristocracy; the impact of WW1." I'm so excited Downton Abbey is back - what a glorious soap opera.

Actually we here in Southern Michigan may start warming up within the next couple of weeks. We were forecast to have a warmer than normal winter, and all that we've had for the last few weeks are temps below normal, like January temps, some days haven't got above freezing. Temps have been running with highs in the 30s and lows in the teens and 20s. if we are to average out to be warmer than normal, then we gotta start warming up eventually. Or is it just wishful thinking?

I look at the 1st of March as the start of the new season. Tha't only about 10 weeks away. Within a couple of weeks of theat I start moving my potted Sabal minors outside. It really is not that far away.

But likely colder as the jet streams wobbles into a new stasis.
