Buy more seedlngs or wait till next year?

Hi!

I have 3 pepper plants: red chile, serrano and jalepeno, that are 12-16" tall in 1-gallon containers.

They don't seem to be growing anymore and I am afraid they are getting rootbound, so I have decided to plant them in the ground so they can develop more. They were bought as seedlings about 30 days ago.

If I'm going to put them in the ground, I could also buy more seedlings to plant as well. But, since it is late June, is it too late for new plants to bear fruit by the end of September?

I just finished putting my peppers out for the year here in Maine. Depends on size of seedlings, variety, etc. but I would go for it.

I think you'll be hard pressed to NOT get fruit if you were to put more seedlings into the ground. Most plants that you'll find in the stores/nurseries should be quite developed, and have no problem being transplanted. (They'll most likely be rootbound in the 3- 4- or 6-cell packs, but will do well.) We've planted peppers and tomatoes as late as mid July, and had buckets full of produce, even here in Michigan. You should be fine.

This year I baught a sweet gypsy pepper and a cubanell pepper plant. Their fruits shape, color, taste are very similar. I am letting one of each fruit to stay on and ripen for seeds. This way I do not have to buy seeds or plants next year. I wonder what color a ripen gypsy/cubanell will be? I will find out. One more Comment: I do not plant bell peppers for 3 reasons and prefer peppers like sweet gypsy and cubanell instead: 1- Bell peppers are not as flavorful as the above. 2- Bell peppers are not as productive as the above. 3- Bell peppers are sold in Asian markets here real cheap. Both my gypsy and cubanell peppers are doing great right now.And keep bearing more and more fruits. Oh! I just realized to fertilize them tomorrow. Cyrus

buy an Oncidium now or wait till spring?

Your first photo doesn't look like an Oncidium. Might be a mix but sort of looks like a Zygo. The later photos are Oncidiums which are easy to grow. The dark colored plant looks like a Sharry Baby which smells like chocolate. Give it a sniff! I grew them for years in NY in a window and summer outside. They like cooler temps so should do fine in your place. Buy them now and slowly acclimate them to your environment. Don't put them in direct sun but a bright location. They do not like to get dry so keep them slightly moist. I wouldn't repot and would wait until Spring to do it. Wait on the first plant in your photo until someone else comments on it. If I'm correct, that is not an Oncidium...but I could be wrong. Jane

It really depends what seeds you have. I shall assume you mean tall bearded iris, and say YES they will keep for a few years. The main problem I would expect is that the longer they are dormant the longer it will take for them to break dormancy. I quite often get seeds germinating over a year from planting, and this year I have some germinating more than 2 years since planting. Germination rates might decrease a little also. Good luck with your changes. I believe we make our own peace and happiness, depending on our choices and the level of our expectations. Be happy with simple things, and find peace in the garden. Jim, I am hoping someone with more experience than I will respond, but here is my opinion. There is danger in either choice. Plumeria need heat and light to root, and it takes a while for that to happen. I would expect it will be getting cooler where you are as well as fewer hours of sunlight, so rooting now may be difficult unless you have a heat mat and grow lights to augment mother nature. However, although there are reports of cuttings being viable after months in storage, I think the chance of successful rooting drops the longer you wait to root them. Last year, i planted many different varieties from seed on the ninth of june. I did get decent yield out of most. The only one that didnt ripen in time was fatalli peppers but i know they had to be close. I use my peppers mainly to make a powder for later use....and i got a decent amount of powder. I live in wisconsin. Go for it.
