To mist or not to mist that's the question...

So anyone else besides me misting their Plumies' leaves and trunk?

If you do, do you find it helpful or harmful?

If you don't why not?

I just think after a hot day, misting them in the late evening make them look more refreshed... but then again what do I know.

Sometimes when it gets really hot out, 95+, I would mist mine (the leaves) after the sun set behind the trees too, so you're not the only one. ;)

I use a shower type hose nozzle and give established plants a shower (well more than misting) at least once or twice a week. Generally in the evenings. I stand back and arc the shower on to the plants like a rain shower. I also use a sprayer up close which can push off dropped flowers, leaves, etc. that get caught on leaves.

I was surprised how much water funnels down the branches and trunk into the pot. It is nearly impossible to over water with fast draining soil and high temperatures so I dont think twice about it.

Hey, Meester Reek...if the size/weight/configuration of the piece allows, you can save a lot of clock watching by misting it thoroughly just once and sealing it air tight in a big black plastic bag. It keeps any breezes off and maintains just about perfect hydration. That's how I cure nearly all of my supercritical neat paste mixes. I even searched janitorial suppliers for giant bags & found some that are five feet tall and heavy weight. Often I will set the work up off the bottom of the bag on a piece of board and pour in some additional water. And if you have sunny to hot weather, sitting the black plastic out in the sun actually helps by heating up and re-condensing the moisture all over the inside of the bag. It's a poor man's "steam-cure" and it works great. Just make sure to seal it up tightly. On critical work, I leave it undisturbed for a solid week, but 3 to 4 days will generally do the job on most work. It does, and it doesn't lol. Your idea would work wonderfully, if it was something we could do without too much worry. See we have cats, who seem to LOVE standing water. (they even come around when we do mist, to try and drink the small drops that slide off the leaves. And of course, being cats, EVERYTHING makes them throw up) We just bought a new humidifer, cool visible mist type. It works really well, but somehow it still doesn't seem like enough. We are hoping this humidifier lasts longer than the last. My question now I guess, is since we have been misting, and it really hasn't done any damage (all previous damage was tracked down to over fertilization and/or unknown conditions before we bought them) One the plus side, our new Ice Cream is producing a new leaf, that looked like it was very deep in the pseudostem when we brought it home on Saturday. Today I can see the top of the cigar leaf popping up. Now if this darn thing would just produce a pup or two so we know it's healthy and happy...:-)

I am actually building a vivarium, so it won't be water tight, I actually want it to have good air exchange so I can grow some micro orchid species. I have actually built my own homemade misting system using an old 12V windshield washer pump from a car, and some drip irigation parts. My only problem is that I can't find an auto timer that would turn the pump on for 15 seconds at a time several times a day. Everything I can find has a one minute minimum. I am worried that the Windshield Washer pump will burn up with repeated 1 minute runs. Because of this concern, I am looking for a cheap, effective alternative that I can use in the event of pump failure.

Honed Virginia Mist/ Jet Mist enhanced after being sealed?

Honed Jet Mist is a very porous stone. Some less porous stones may reject the enhancer after they have been sealed or just not let the enhancer darken the stone as much. Enhancers are to be considered impregnating sealers and topical sealers as well. If the enhancer penetrates the surface it is because the jet mist is still somewhat porous. That's fine and the enhaner will give you some degree of enhancement. Even if it doesn't penetrate the surface if applied properly think of your honed surface as a microscopic English muffin. The color enhancer like the water will end up filling all the nooks and crannies at a micro level. The water evaporates out but with the enhancer the solvent carrier will evaporate and the resins will be left behind.Color enhancers down side is that if they do act as a topical they will wear and need to be maintained by reapplying them over time. Granite method wont darken it but UV light will over time.

Personally I do mist my plumie leaves, and though I don't mist the trunks I don't go out of my way to avoid them, I just don't think they can do anything with the water like the leaves can. I don't know that it makes a visually noticeable difference but it can be a little pick me up when it's not quite time to water, to rinse off the leaves, create a little humidity near them, that kind of thing. I definitely don't think it hurts anything!

Our humidity is rarely below 80%, not much point in misting when the air is already so wet.

I mist a twice per week, alternating water and dilute seaweed extract. I use a 1.5 gallon pump sprayer (which saves time and hand cramps!) rather than a spray bottle. I have low humidity, about 20% right now, so it seems to make a difference. I like misting the trunk as well as the leaves.
I think the appropriateness of misting is determined by your climate; as beachplant mentioned, there's no reason to mist when it is super humid!

Thank you all for your replies. I didn't get to mist them last night b/c we got lots of rain! I freaked out and carried all the young ones inside and lined them up like sardines in my family room. The bigger ones were tucked under the overhang and got slightly wet but I think they will be fine. I sure hope so!

I mist almost daily in our TX 95+ degree weather.
Alternating between "Thrive" and a liquid fertilizer.
Even unrooted cuttings seem to enjoy the extra water.
