Silver date palm - Phoenix sylvestris
Comments (6)Nah, not really. What I did was waited until a Saturday, potted the popped ones, then waited a week and planted the one or two stragglers the next Saturday. Pretty much after that, I didn't have any that popped. However what you might do is something I just recently started. Take unpopped seeds, put them in water, if they floated, I pitched them. If they sank, I threw into a bucket with natural dirt from my back yard. Then I forget about them. I think I will check on them about April and see if anything is going on....See MoreSpots on Phoenix sylvestris
Comments (4)If the spots are raised, it is more likely to be a fungus. If not, it could be a deficiency or still be a fungus. Did it have the spots before it was transplanted? I am not sure that a shortage of anything except N would show up so quickly. Is there some mealy bug type of insect on the underside of the leaflets in the lower photograph?...See MorePhoenix Sylvester Palms. PICS!
Comments (9)hey tropic zone thanks, actually all that sand is fill dirt i had 20 load brought in because the grade was so low.. and i just had the bulkhead built.. the reason it is sandy because all the rain we had coeuple weeks ago brought the sand in the dirt to top, then it was scorching hot which dried it all out.. but yeah im pretty close to beach. anyway. should i go ahead and start putting epsom salt and fish emulsion around thes e guys? or wait? ive been watering them everyday. do i need to get a fertilizer or is what i said sufficient? thanks again i may get a Sago Palm up close the house by the garage, maybe surrounded by 2 Queen palms, i also want to get a tall chinese windmill for the otherside, and have access to some free banana tree sprouts...See MorePhoenix Dactylifera (Date Palm) Growth rate
Comments (13)Amaretto, Phoenix dactylifera, like most palms, will grow slowly the first couple of years. They tend to put most of their energy into producing roots instead of foliage. Once the leaves go pinnate, the plants will start to grow more rapidly. If you live in an area with colder winters like I do(I keep all of my container palms in an unheated greenhouse), your P.dac will more than likely stop growing until the spring. If you can give them supplemental heat, you can probably get at least twice the growth of the one in the picture. Also, they tend to be prone to leaf spotting while in the seedling stage, but will grow out of it once they go pinnate....See Moretopher2006
