Clay pot prep?

First, many thanks for the plentiful plummie info I've gotten from all you regular posters as I've popped in on this forum as a guest over last couple of years. I've learned that plumeria roots stick to clay pots but was wondering if anyone has tried rubbing vegetable oil on the inside of the pot before planting? Recently bought a lot of clay pots cheap and could use them for other plants if you all tell me this is not a good idea. What do you think?

you know that actually might be a good idea. i dont know if it works or not but it sounds like it would. almost sounds like when you spray Pam on pans when you bake lol

Nice idea, but I don't think it would work. I think the oil would soak into the clay pot and soil, and eventually be washed away with watering. You might be able to find clear plastic pot inserts at a garden center, just make sure they have drain holes in them. Good Luck.

I paint my plantpots with acrylic paints & then add cut outs from fancy paper napkins. 1.Use a clean pot,then paint with acrylic paint.Dry thoroughly 2.Having cut out your chosen pattern from a paper napkin,peel off the backing so you only have a 1 ply paper. 3.Stick on the pot with acrylic glue,then leave to dry. 4.If using pot indoors 1 coat of varnish is adequate,if using outdoors use a good outdoor varnish spray & give 2-3 coats. I have pots all over my Spanish courtyard all decorated in this manner. Note:If you become quite good at this there is an alternative decoration application between stages 1 & 2.You can brush with a Crackle Medium (brush in one direction only with a well loaded brush.Leave to dry,then paint on top with a lighter colour than your base paint.I find cream is best. Leave to dry & your pot will have a very nice distressed appearance.Then you carry on with the other stages. Enjoy!!

I don't have any bats and don't know what causes the folding but my jaboa/aubrytiana has leaves like that since I've had it. The new ones are fine though. Have you tried looking for clay pots at a garden center or nursery? My local garden center has reasonably priced clay pots. What about lowes or homedepot? They could be having a clearance sale now.

Most weird thing is that if I make a post from a new device (a new loptop, mobile phone etc), it is not visible even to me when I login from a different device. I can only see my own posts, immediately after posting, if I log on from the same machine..... I haven't understood how this happens. Feeding during monsoon has been a problem for me since past few years and I have tried different models. Since I wanted to be 100% organic, most solutions that I tried didn't work that well and my roses would stand exhausted and depleted by the end of monsoon. This year, I fed them after the monsoon in August and September with a doze that comprised 1 tea spoon each of Potash, gypsum, a water soluble 36-0-12 nitrogen fertilizer and a trace element supplement that contained Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Co and Mb mixed in 18 liters of water (capacity of the bucket). This had a good effect on the roses in pots that you can see in my threads of that time. There is also lot of discussion about the pros and cons of various methods... Maybe the word you are looking for is olla? Those are clay pots used to slowly release water. Often bottle shaped ( I have one in my lime tree pot), one can also use regular clay pots without holes too. I haven't tried using a olla for cuttings, might depend on the release rate of the pot you pic, and the moisture needs of the cuttings as to how well it will work.

Thanks for the quick responses. Maybe I'll try just one noid plummie (so it won't be as painful as losing a more expensive plant) in a well oiled pot. Hadn't thought of the plastic inserts- great idea. I'll let you all know how the one oiled pot does when I transplant next spring!

I seriously doubt the oil will keep the roots from sticking to the clay for any length of time. I like the look of ceramic and terra cotta pots much more then plastic nursery pots and I do use them for many of my plants. I just make sure that there's a coat of laquer or paint on the inside of the pot. I've even used spar varnish on the inside of a pot to keep the roots from sticking.

I have coated the inside of my clay pots with Thompsom Waterproof Sealer.

You can always leave it in the plastic pot and just drop your pot into the terra cotta pots. When your plumie gets bigger and need to be repot, all you have to do is slip it out of the old pot and into the new larger pot and then into a larger beautiful eye appealing pots.

I agree that placing the nursery pot in the clay container is easiest but I have some odd shaped ceramic containers that won't accommodate a round nursery pot. I never thought about using Thompsons. Thanks, I'll have to give it a try.
