Great site...I just bought another book by Louisa Jones, "Kitchen Gardens of France" the pictures are beautiful. Everytime I pick up the book I have to thumb through the pictures, so I haven't even got through the 1st chapter!

I'll not debate the style, as I think you can go either way. Reproduction French Provincial houses can be extremely formalized as well as quite rustic - a rural manor house much like Monet's farmhouse at Giverny. These are pretty common in the California wine country and the landscaping tends to be pretty loose. If the house in question is very symmetrical and formally styled, then a formalized garden would suit as well. Otherwise, I'd go with the looser, more Impressionistic garden style that lucy describes. A formal garden is a lot of upkeep :-) Do some research on formal garden styles and look specifically at parterres and knot gardens. It is not so much the plant selection particularly as it is the manner in which they are used. Generally, the very formally sheared or clipped hedge plants are used to surround and contain looser plantings, but often these are rather monochromatic gardens with a very strong emphasis on green. Roses would be appropriate as well as any smallish broadleaf evergreen shrub amenable to frequent pruning - azaleas, gardenias, germander, dwarf hollies, etc. Yews or privets for larger hedges but other evergreens could work as well - camellias or choisya for example. Then it's pretty much your choice as to how the fill the beds these plants define. Lots of lawns and paved areas too.

We bought the plans online, and had a contractor friend of ours build it. Unfortunantly, the plans were not great, and there are some MAJOR changes I would now make to it before I built another one. Ebay now has a ton of cute small coops. It would be worth it to buy them premade (even with shipping). My mom bought a small wooden children's playhouse and converted it-- it is way cute, too! The coop is sitting on the concrete, though there is now about 12-16" of straw covering it. We had originally planned to put it on soil, but forgot that the neighbor on that side has a satanic dog that would terrorize our chickens! So it went on the other side of the house on the cement pad. This also prevents any predators from digging under the coop, so I guess its OK. We started off with only 2-3 chickens as well. But we started with bantams (minature chickens, about 1/4 the size) so they would do less destruction to our landscape and so my daughter could more easily hold them. We have been very happy with them, especially the Cochin breed, which are very calm and sweet. I would STRONGLY suggest you visit www.backyardchickens.com/forum and look around there for a while....there is so much fabulous info there. Over 22,000 members across the country and so much knowledge. I spent hours and hours on the site and learned so much before we even got the babies. Here she is reading books to them in the doghouse :)

Some of you may recognize my garden...I had the honor of a 6 page spread in Easy-Care Landscaping Magazine this summer. Thanks again, enjoy the tours! What a strange thread. I thought about not posting at all, and I agree with one poster who said folks need to get outside for some dirt and fresh air. Where I come from in Hawaii, land has always been worth its weight in diamonds. No one can afford to grow in rows; consequently, people there take advantage of every nook and cranny they can find. They've gardened that way for generations. In any garden bed you will find mustard or pak choi cabbage growing alongside Thai basil growing alongside daikon radish growing alongside Manoa lettuce, hot chili peppers, and often, a big pot of Portuguese parsley. Bamboo tepees support string beans and yard long beans. Green onions are tucked everywhere because they are used daily! Hanging above it all in typical wood slat pots you will find one or more of the thousands of orchid varieties, some blooming on fragrant long stalks that perfume the entire neighborhood. My father grew vanilla orchids on an old rotten tree stump, the tallest thing in the garden. He'd use a ladder to get up there to hand pollinate the blooms. Not four feet away were a couple of papaya plants laden with fruit. Way in the background was banana and a small avocado tree on its way to becoming a giant. My mother used to always have a pineapple or two growing because she said the sharp, sword-like leaves chased away bad spirits. We shrugged our shoulders at that, but the pineapple was always sweeter than what was found in the stores. All of this was growing in a postage stamp of a back yard which still had to have room for a clothes line. I live in Kansas now, where it is quite easy to grow in rows, but my garden is no different from my mother's, always has been, just no pineapple or papaya alas. I guess the term "potager" must be like a buzz word for some and that makes it more special. Who knows. I just garden the way my parents did because it is practical.

SweetAnnie- I love your name. Thank you for the list of plants, I want them all. I peeked at your webpage..OMGosh your home and gardens are beautiful. That Mr. Magoo is a absolute doll.

Yes, Mr. Magoo was a one of a kind little Hammy, Hoggy Doggy. Sadly, he passed away in March 2003. He lived a long, happy 17 years, which was twice the normal expectancy for a dog of his size and weight. He was very heavy, being half Basset Hound and half Black Lab. The only dog I ever saw that could not swim - his body was too dense. He sunk like a freakin' rock! I had to put "floaties" on him so he could swim. He loved it. It was adorable. :)

He loved the snow and skateboarding with the kids.

Everyone loved Mr. Magoo and he loved them right back. He was a "Happy Little Hound Dog". I miss him very, very much. I built a memorial page to him if you want to go read more about him. It's linked to my son's memorial page, as Magoo was his dog. I'm glad you can see what a special pup he was.

I lost my Mikie, too, last summer. I cried for weeks. He never left my side and even protected me many times from snakes. Mike loved the snow too and like making snow angels. (teehee) They loved going for walks up on the meadow with me everyday. At night, Hammy slept on my bed, crowding me all night, hogging the whole bed, and Mike happily slept on a rug on the floor at my side. Mike had a natural radar for tornadoes. When he ran for the basement door you could bet that meant there was a tornado near. He was an 99% accurate meteroligist. I miss them both. My best buddies. They went with me everywhere in my little red pickup. Hammy stood with his front feet on my lap (crushing my legs) so that he could see out. Mike sat on the seat next to me like a kid. Big smiles on their faces. They both wore seat belts. (hehehe) They were very well behaved and friendly pups. Everyone loved my boys.

Great list! That is the book I linked to when mr.toad posted about potager books. Lots of good info on there.

Annie, sorry about your pooch passings. : ( I know the empty feeling and longing for them all too well. Your "boys" sound so sweet. What a lovely way to remember them. I hope another furbaby comes into your life soon and brightens your days.
