Terrarium for ailing Phal?
Comments (8)Growing Phallys in the home seems like a difficult feat for me but apparently many do very well with Phallys. These orchids are really best suited for a very warm greenhouse with moderate to high air movement, a very high humidity around 80% (prob. range of 65%-90%) and light that runs probably around 1200 to 1800 foot candles (perhaps up to 2400 foot candles). The use of a terrarium may be great in nursing a plant but care must be given in the culture. Not so much watering but good humidity and heat especially at night. These plants prefer a stable heated environment not the daily dips that are found in most homes. It are the temperature fluctuations that can range from the low 60s to the low 80s that I tend to think is the primary culprit in the failure of most phallys besides the souring of the soil mix coupled with overwatering that accounts for most phally death in in-home cultivation. Probably the best answer are the so-called orchidariums that are available or that can be constructed. These environmental cases provide the grower with full control of the needed light exposure, humidity, and heat that should make home growing much more successful. Otherwise the best way of growing phallys in the home is to have a greenhouse out back and bring the plant into the home when it is in flower!...See MoreFig leaves with Redish / Brown Veins On BackSide and Leave Tips.
Comments (12)Jonathan, An interesting observation. Not sure what 'tip' means. Probably you did not mean those dormant 'scale shields' that first drop off at dormancy break, cannot remember the right technical term. Just went out to inspect all my figs trees. Noticed some that fit your description. At this early stage of spring, I noticed some figs with 'still tightly' held buds that looked reddish. On very close examination, I noticed that it is ACTUALLY the underside of the (very young) curled leaves that FIRST shows up, together with their underside veins! This is what gives the 'tip' the red hue. No contradiction here. Then the leaf flips over and the vein red color fades, as it matures. This is what I observed: My 2 HCs (sources: EL and Hartmann) showed it. Sal's (EL) showed it. VdB (EL) showed it. My #4 unknown (Ta Cenc) showed it (wonder what this fig really is!). My #2 (MOST obvious, also observed by Herman last year) and #5 unknowns (supposedly of the Mission fig type) showed it. All other figs none... Specifically looked at the Black Mission and Vista Mission young figs (both) from Jon, and neither showed it! They may in a more advanced leafing out stage. However I did observe the the Vista breba start as a bead-sized, shoe-polish-black color, and then fade away as the figlets grows... George (NJ)....See Morestreps and heat
Comments (5)I thank you all for your answers and suggestions, both on and off list. I took the remaining strep, Salmon Sunset, and put it in the coldest room of the house, which, of course, is also the darkest room. I put it in the windowsill so as to get light. Then I caught three wild kittens in a cat trap. I put them also in this room, idiot that I am. When it came time to catch the kittens to start taming them, they ran hissing and spitting and clawing and fighting, along the windowsill to get out. The poor strep went flying. Of it's remaining leaves, three or four got broken off, only two remain on the plant. The poor plant is looking miserable. I give up. I don't want it's death on my conscious. I'd give it away via mail, but I live in Tampa where the temps are in the 90's so mailing it in a hot box would kill it for good. Sooooo...if there's anyone in Tampa who'd like to come and pick up the pitiful thing, they can have it. Come quick, lol. I caretake my elderly father and can get out of here on Tuesdays if you want to meet somewhere. Lori...See MoreWhy are the leaves are dying and browning at tip
