Liquid Fence, it worked for rabbits and squirrels but is designed for deer. I have Mad squirrels who dig and eat everything. In the Fall they ate holes in our pumpkins big ones and got down to the seeds, left no scraps behind. One got to my Hab this season, that they left behind ha ha only one attempt and that's it. But they have dug up a few of my pepper plants. Little mini rat dogs.

YES YES YES...damn right they will eat them....they wiped me out on a weekend i was gone last summer....leaves, stems, PODS------you better believe they eat pepper plants
i suggest a 22 caliber, 12 gauge if you don't eat meat, or

If they're hot peppers, the deer won't eat the pods.
They may take a bite, but they don't like the burn and will stop.

However, deer will eat leaves and stems of the hots and all parts of the sweet pepper plants.

That would probably make quite a mess in your garden... but cleaned up, chopped and composted you might have some great fertilizer for next year.

OK, i had no super hots, but they/it ate jalapenos, serranos, bulgarian carrots, cayene, thai hots plus others......virtually all the pods gone....a few left on the ground, but this was the 3'rd week of September and were loaded......more than thirty plants plus the rest of the garden. Appears they/it were in there for several days, but who knows, maybe Lopez Island has a weird vintage of deer, but whatever, they sure taste good

My dog eats Hungarian Hot Wax. Probably others but I haven't given him the opportunity to get them yet.

Last year I put several dozen habaneros(rotting or extras) around my garden and I was lucky enough to witness a deer just after eating one. He started snorting loud and kicking and soon snot started pouring out of its nose. The other deers just watched, not knowing what was going on. This lasted for several minutes before they ran off.. Very entertaining

I watched for nearly an hour a doe graze the yard where I have my containers - it's essentially an open field. She sampled everything wild, and spent a lot of time cleaning up the fallen seeds under the bird feeder (damn cardinals excavate for sunflower seeds). But she showed no interest in the peppers.

Nor the basil, for that matter. Guess she has an unschooled palate...

My guess is that deer could smell your presence on and around the pepper containers.

I would think that would work. I have heard that sprinkling human hair cuttings around plants will keep away most animals also. Just have your wife shave your head and collect the cuttings to sprinkle around your plants. Simple, effective and low cost. Plus, you have the added benefit of not needing another hair cut for months.

My wife is a hairdresser. We sprinkled hair around our garden last year. It seemed to keep most of the animals away. One thing it did not affect was the squirrels. I haven't found anything to stop those little tree rats. They ate almost 110 stalks of corn this year. I didn't have a problem last year until I actually had some corn on the stalks. This year they cleaned the corn out before it was 2 feet tall. I'm not a hunter. I prefer to "live and let live. I would ,however, kill a squirrel and urinate on it's carcass!

That is what I'm thinking about doing next year. The problem is corn gets so tall, and squirrels can climb a fence. I think maybe it's almost not worth the cost. It seems like by the time I buy and build a fence to protect the corn, I could just buy from a local grower cheaper. I just wish I could speak "squirrel". Then maybe we could come to an agreement. Oh well....it is what it is.
