Finally in bloom

Finally, after more years than I care to remember, Jim Little's Goldilocks is blooming. It is definitely worth the wait. The colors, even in coastal San Diego,, are beautiful. And the smell? Well let's just say it is the perfect scent. It has been an incredibly long wait for this, but sooooo worth it. I'd post a picture, but that isn't happening! Mary

"Congrats" Mary. It's such a gift when they finally bloom. I only have one blooming this year but still have inflos on another so am hopeful. I'll take whatever I can get. Most of mine are small so will be a few more years before I get much to look at. Keep up the good work.

Beng, in '85 TN experienced it's overall coldest temps since records started being kept. In mid-TN, Nashville fell to -17F, Cannon County where I live fell to -28F. That spring there were no blooms on the redbuds, dogwoods, or native deciduous azaleas. Mimosas, crape myrtles, photinias, boxwoods, Asian hollies, native blackberries, Japanese honeysuckle and kudzu were killed to the ground. Magnolia grandiflora were defoliated and some suffered wood loss and a very few were killed outright. In '89, temps again came close but did not equal '85, that was the year that pushed citrus in FL below Orlando. Interestingly, most native stuff, including stuff native to farther south of here (mags, loblollies, longleaf pine) suffered relatively little damage. I suspect the genes for cold hardiness are present in much of the native flora, indicating a possible much colder past. Over all, the out of season warm weather and then Jan-like temps of March-April of '07 did WAY more damage, some of which is still visible today.

Hi Lori, I'm also in central Texas. Did you grow these yourself for five years? And have you cut them down a some point? They seem very short for being five years old. Plumeria seedlings generally grow very tall very quickly. Like this:They can take anywhere from 3-8 years to bloom, though I've noticed that they often bloom first at a certain height rather than a certain age, around 3-4'.

Fred, my Coral Beach from fluwel opened its first two blooms yesterday. It looks like yours more or less and not like the pictures on the website. But seeing it in person makes me think that it is not Tosca! Flower shape is different and the colors too. This one has some raspberry red and some orange red in it. Tosca has bigger flowers and looks more dramatic.What do you think? My Tosca has a bud but it will open too late to see them side by side.

@rosecanadian, @katyajini yes KMK has a strong fragrance for me. This morning it even waft a little. So far this rose has been doing so well, disease free, pretty flowers and fragrance. The only thing left to be seen is repeat. Here is a picture of KMK with a Lavender Veranda bloom next to it for comparison. Lavender Veranda’s blooms are small to begin with and now they became tiny in the hot weather. Kate still looks pretty. I had a lot of thrip damage a week ago. I can see the little thrips on the blooms. This week I don’t see much damage. I wonder If some beneficial insects got them under control...

Congratulations!!! We want to see a picture soooo badly!! I have such a love for Goldilocks - mine are very young (2) and I've never seen anyone post that they had one and that it was blooming! And you are certainly not bothering anyone!!

Mary, you're such a tease posting about this incredibly beautiful plumeria that I've never seen before. I was expecting a photo too! Guess I'll just have imagine what it's like! LOL!

Hehe you guys are too funny. My photography skills rank right up there with my plumeria growing skills! When I reread my post it sounded like bragging and that's not good. So again I apologize. It's just that I've had it since Sandy was selling on Ebay. A long, long time to wait for a bloom. But the good news...I do have patience. Thanks for the replies. Mary

Mary...I think plumeria-growing is a lesson in patience, and anyone who masters it, deserves both- the glorious bloom and bragging rights :) I don't have a cell phone that takes pictures, or a computer that I can upload pictures on, so I understand the frustration of not being able to share pictures of our plants...but this forum is still a wondeful place to visit and enjoy the flowers of others...
