Caterpillar eating my tomatoes

Hi all, i just found an odd caterpillar eating a hole in my bush tomatoes, its also left a black hole on the under side. I know about the green horn worm but this one is orange with spots ( see pics)

I disposed of it and the tomato and checked my other plants but can anyone enlighten me on what type this is?

Could it be one of the Australian Helicoverpa? It looks similar to the N. American species, and it's certainly acting like one.

The Bt liquids I have used left no visible residue and worked well on the catepillars I had. I also felt I got better coverage with the spray since you can spray the undersides of leaves but powdering the undersides is ... tricky. I hope that helps. Betsy

Varment eating my tomatoes but does not eat the skin?

Yeah, very familiar to me here in NY. They seem to knock them to the ground then just eat the middles until they get to the skin on the back side. Pretty much narrowed it down to squirrels as the culprits. I find a combination of pepper spray, "waiting till the tomatoes grow higher than the squirrels care to climb", and just letting them have some until the plant outproduces what they eat is the least stressful solution for me. Haven't noticed any remains on the ground now for a couple weeks and enjoying all the tomatoes we can eat! Carol, you are right about caterpillars doing better in cool weather with the wasps disappearing. I have found 2 'wild' caterpillars in the last couple of days...the first living ones I have found since early July. The chrysalis, which are mainly attached to my patio fence, hardly ever survive - they are often 'adopted' by a garden spider. That is why I move them to a safe place whenever I find them. I keep them right outside my window, attached to a repurposed jewelry tree, where I can watch them hatch. They are protected by a 'moat' to protect them from ants, spiders.

If yours are like ours, they come in many colors to make them difficult...but there should be photos since they're major crop pests.

of course.. you already gave it a good eyeballing... and that is about all i would do ... and i would do it again.. after dark ... just for the heck of it ...

i see you are just coming into summer down there ... the first tomato is always cherished.. but usually.. soon enough.. you will be wishing you had more interesting bugs to look at... for the 50 million Ts you now hate.. lol ...
