Please name this insect

Hi,

These insects are all over my eggplant, courgettes and pepper plants. I need to know what they are and whether or not they are a pest or helpful to my plants before I try getting rid of them.

Also if they are pests, can you please suggest how to get rid of them?

A few clues would help. What part of the world do you live in?

I live in New Zealand, the bug has buggy eyes and look a little like a frog, if you go to touch them they jump really high and quickly, they are only a about 5mm long. I came out to my eggplant this morning and it was covered in them.
I have searched all over the net for them and I cannot find what they are.

Thank you for that tip and the link. I've had a few pleas for something to bring home and each time I've unearthed a rooted section. I don't know if it is typical of this species, but rather than one large rooted growth there are many scattered in the soil beneath the leaves. Very easy to nab a small one. But from now on I can send folks off with a leaf and instructions from that link. Like I mentioned, there is something particularly attractive about this flower. I've got some exceptionally beautiful orchids in my office space and a couple of flowering Maple and Bougainvillea in other parts of the house (i'm most fond of papery colorful delicate blooms). Last year I had a large old Hibiscus with a solid one inch trunk that just would not stop producing mind-blowing six inch diameter blooms all over like fireworks for months straight. Sadly, I left it on the deck through a couple of early frosts and lost it. Still, everyone seems to swoon over the Cape Primrose. Thanks for the info guys.

The main problem with spraying poisons is that you cannot poison one thing without poisoning everything. For example, many people spray for aphids when they could simply knock them off with a strong jet of water. Nature is a cycle of interconnected relationships. Killing off all of the aphids destroys the food source early in the season for beneficial bugs such as Lady bugs. Without this food source the Lady bug population suffers and declines. Later in the season when you need a healthy population of Lady bugs to feed on Thrips, there are not enough and you get a severe outbreak of Thrips. Spraying poison leads to the need to spray more poison, where is if you will let your yard get in balance you will have very few problems. I read about all of the problems people have with their roses and with gardening in general and many of the problems come from not understanding that nature is a web of interdependent cycles.

Looks like a young wheel bug. A predator. Perhaps rhizo will be along soon to say yes or no.

Perhaps a planthopper of some sort?

Where are they clustered? On the leaves, stems, or fruits?

It is a plant hopper, I finally found some information, they cluster on the stems and under the leaves. I need to know if they are a pest. The leaves that they are on become all dry and brown and there are no aphids on the leaves.

Yes, they are pests.

Beyond that, plants that are overwhelmed with pests often have cultural problems. You'll need to figure out what that is. Take your choice from too wet, too dry, too "hungry" and lots more.
