We have been in the 70's and hit the 80's a couple times for the last 3 weeks. I know it has not helped even my newly planted hardy perennials. Funny this time of year I normally worry about frost not heat LOL. I probably should have planted my hardy perennials in Feb... Yesterday we cooled to the mid 50's and it has been raining, today the same mid 50's and raining and should continue into Sunday. I just went outside and the Green Panda is looking MUCH better. I think the cool temps and rain are helping it cope with the move.

It is normally called transplant shock and we can only speculate if it will recover. The older the shrubs, the more difficult it is to recover from transplants. Some leaf losss is to be expected but daily watering sounds like too much water, which can then lead to root rot. It sounds like it isgetting to be too late for this one but keep trying. I would wait until next Spring before pulling it out. Try the basics: a little sun only (before 10-11am); 3-4" of mulch; try some very low strength root stimulator; instead of fertilizers, use liquid seaweed which is weak and can be used to feed thru the leaves; control daily watering; water only when a finger feels dry or almost dry if you insert it to a depth of 4"; whenever you replant, make sure you place it slightly above the surrounding soil; transplant when the shrub is dormant if time permits; choose a location that is not windy.

Hi Abrarage, Before transplanting make sure that you plant is ready to be transplanted, specifically make sure that the roots inside its current container occupy enough of the soil to hold together so that when you take it out large clusters of roots won't break away. One thing I do is to let the potted fuchsia dry just a little bit so that the soil isn't as heavy when I transplant. Also never be afraid to plant a fuchsia too deep, as it will develop roots higher up if needed. Fuchsias keep their roots close to the surface of the soil so make sure to keep it moist after transplanting until it gets established. Your particular problem may be due to any number of causes. The first I would suggest is that if the basket you transplanted it to is not draining well, then water may be backing up inside keeping the root zone too wet and thus slowly drowning the roots. Another probable cause could be too many roots were broken during transplant and so the plant needs time and TLC to recover. Yet another cause could be location. If the basket to which you transplanted is in a different location, which maybe gets more sun or more reflected heat say from a cement patio, then that can cause some heat stress which will have negative results. Another less likely cause may be that you used too much B-1 for the plant to handle. Often the directions on the bottle call for larger volumes of solution than are needed for transplanting small fuchsias. If too much B-1 was given then it should be leached from the soil after several instances of watering and a few days but the plant will take a few weeks to recover (assuming of course your basket is draining well). Also make sure you don't use liquid fertilizers during or shortly after transplanting, this can also have a negative impact on the health of the plant. Wait at least three weeks after transplanting before fertilizing. While I'm on the subject of fertilizer, many fuchsias have roots that are very sensitive to over fertilizing and can easily die, so be careful in how much fertilizer you use...better to use too little than too much. While it won't help for any possible cold damage done up until this point, I second the frost cloth suggestion. I'm in the inland empire, and have 6 in-ground plumeria in the back yard. They've been covered with frost cloth since the first cold spell, and it seems to be working. I didn't do the frost cloth thing last winter until too late, and ended up having to amputate several branches of one of the plumeria the following spring to save it from rot. I don't do anything really fancy - I just buy the long garden stakes at Lowes (6'ish) and stick them in the ground around the plumeria, then throw the frost cloth (also from Lowes) on top and secure it with clothespins. The cloth should touch the ground on all sides. The plumies still get some airflow and light, but the cloth keeps it slightly warmer underneath. I agree with everyone else that you should probably leave it alone (just protect it from future cold spells). Keep an eye on any branches that you think might have damage, though, and if they start feeling mushy, you may need to take action.
