Thermal protection for potted peppers on hot pavement

I am wondering what I can do as my potted peppers and tomatoes around my pool deck which is a poly pebble covered concrete and retains heat so well that it is cooking the roots as I checked my pots and the soil is very warm, dare I say hot by midday. Someone on the tomato forum suggested thermal protection without explaining how it can be done. Should I place a block of wood under the plastic pots or would something as simple as layered cardboard underneath block the heat transfer to the bottom of my pots? Your advice will be appreciated.
