Hi, again, I thought I'd share another cool thing about water rooting. Some of my seedlings have been shrivelling up right at the soil line. I've been throwing them away because I thought they were goners. Then I cut one off and stuck it in the water mixture I use to water root. Check out the root ball forming on this little baby! I'll do this to the rest that have shrivelled now! Crafty

You know, I've had trouble with a few seedlings shriveling up at the soil line like you mentioned. I'm attributing it to the soil I was trying. Maybe it was too compacted? It's only happening with seedlings that I happened to use a particular mixture to plant. I was wondering if you knew why it was happening with you? Is it a common thing with seedlings? Cuttings I understand, but seedlings are still fairly new to me. Thank you for sharing your water rooting pic. Gives me faith to try it with my struggling babies!

Purple1701, I think trial and error is the way most of us learn. Indeed, although I do consult a few resources now and then, most of my gardening is still done that way. (My mother says I was a stubborn child :)) I find it more fun than the scientific method. Admittedly, it's probably a bit more expensive, but since I grow mostly from seed, it's not too bad. Leggy seedlings happen to the best of us ;-) Don't toss them. I was out of town for two weeks mid January. I seeded my starter trays in what I thought was dry starter mix and was going to drop them off at friends place so they could get them started while I was away. Just before I left their heat pump went in their barn/grow area so I put domes on the trays and left them in our dark cool basement. To my surprise I guess there was enough dampness and moisture in the mix that around a dozen varieties sprouted and were a leggy 2 inches high. I just deeply transplanted them into three inch pots, only leaving around a centimeter of stem and leaves above the mix. Most hadn't developed true leaves yet. Every one of them is doing fine now. Peppers aren't as fragile as people think. If you're not comfortable transplanting them now, Rick's suggestion is a good one. Bill This post was edited by ottawapepper on Mon, Feb 3, 14 at 15:02

Elena, Thanks for the interest. Way back when this forum was first introduced, there were multiple threads on how to braid multiple Adenium plants and their stems together- to form a "single" but plaited "trunk". Resulting trees are interesting, if you like that sort of thing. Of course, many of the braided trees probably had different flowers blooming from the top branches. It is a process not for the fainthearted. Adeniums must be bare-rooted and water withheld until turgid stems go limp, like a dried carrot. When stems eventually become soft and bendable, you can braid stems without cracking, if you are lucky. The Adeniums are then repotted, and given good cultural conditions. Your Adenium will resemble those braided "Money Trees" (Pachira aquatic) that have flooded Home Depot, etc. A search of threads posted around 4-5 years ago by Marie Tran, will lead to some pictures of braided plants, and to many interesting discussions. I must mention that I have successfully braided 7 separate Adeniums together to form one, very thick "trunk", and grew it until I killed it, from laziness. I left it out just a little too late in the NYC Autumn weather, and frosted the whole shebang to death, by an unpredicted drop in temperature. Rustic, beautiful tones in your seedling! It brought to mind the colour of my Confused Angel when I first bought it. Steve, I would love a hosta with that particular dark colour - stunning and eye-catching placed among those contrasting hostas.

Oh my gosh, I saved a seedling recently too!! I just stuck it in water in a plastic bag and put it in the shade. When I saw roots forming i put it in soil, and now it's rooted down! I couldn't bear to throw it away!!

Hi, Kare, I think my problem with the seedlings was letting them get too dry. You know, the old plumies don't like wet feet thing. lol Now that I know I can save them, I'll never throw another away. The rest of my seedlings, (all 98?, I think), are doing really well, but I'm keeping them regularly watered. With Ohio's 92-95 degree heat, it's almost every day. But, I don't water them so that they are totally soaked either. Just a nice little drink to wet their whistle. lol I know Californians and Texans probably laugh at our measly 95, but for here, it's really hot. lol I just received Leela yesterday, and today she's got root nubs popping out on the sides! I just love water rooting! ;o) Crafty
