Comments (13)Brutal but fixed the problem... Living in the UK: Mid season (June) after an infestation of small black dots (presumably eggs but I never worked out what they were and may not be relevant) the edges of the leaves started turning red and thicker than usual round the edges. After some searching it sounds like it had a fungal infection and the best solution was to dig it up and throw it away. As it is my only plant I thought I’d try some “kill or cure” first. I harvested all the stems and leaves so all that was left was closed buds. I then boiled the kettle, put it in the watering can (don’t melt your watering can) and watered the plant and the surrounding area with a radius of a foot. After a week I harvested and watered again. Apart from a few scorch marks on some of the leaves because some idiot poured boiling water on them the plant was cured. :)...See Moreneed some heat in my salsa
Comments (9)I'll second vic01's advice ... the pepper's are interchangeable, but the proportions need to be the same if you are canning the salsa. Tomatoes are more acidic than peppers, and you have to be careful about increasing low acid ingredients, if you want to be sure the recipe is safe for canning. I use Annie's Salsa recipe too, but I've been using the mild jalapenos, such as Senorita, or Fooled You. It turns out perfect for DH, who can't handle ANY heat, but I too want a hotter version for myself, and to give as gifts to my siblings. This year, I'm growing Beaver Dam, Anaheim, Ancho, TAM, and Mariachi, so I'm hoping to make a batch that is has a bit more heat. Unfortunately, the tomatoes STILL don't have fruit on them, even though they are covered in blooms, so I may not have any salsa at all, unless I buy some tomatoes at the farmer's market! Comments (5)I don't know if watering in itself would cause premature ripe fruits, but I think you should water less in any case. Peppers like their potting mix to drain really well, with lots of perlite and bark if possible. MG is still fine, but will retain water longer than a chunkier mix. This might turn your bell and poblano pepper around as well. I think thick flesh varieties are more prone to rot from over watering. Some of mine did that last year when they were overwatered while I was away for two weeks. Even some of my thin skin hots cracked from it! How's weather been like since the fruits set? I've also had many Habanero-like pods ripen when barely dime-size, but now have a few new pods showing signs of normal growth. This might have been caused by somewhat cool and cloudy conditions for me. I suppose several plant stresses might cause premature ripe fruits. I just pick them as soon as I see a change in colour. Just do this and your plant should start behaving normally eventually, especially if an environmental stress is removed. Almost all my peppers had been doing terrible (in various ways) until a week or two and I now see improvement in all of them. Just give it a bit of time, good luck!...See Morebarrie2m_(6a, central PA)
