I got the plants at OSH in Redwood City. They were in gallon-sized pots, and were pretty rootbound by the time I took them out, which has been my main worry. I tried to loosen up the roots a bit, but I didn't want to do too much and risk damaging them, so I'm not sure that the roots will ever unbind themselves. 120 bare root strawberries! Holy smokes, lol. It's my dream to have a little patch somewhere. I tried to grow them once when I was about 8. I think I got one strawberry and then let the plants die. At the time, I had no idea that they could go on for years and years, not that it probably would have made any difference. A year is a lifetime to an 8-year old. Now that I'm older, I'm a (tiny) bit more patient, so I may have to follow in your footsteps and start a-growin'!

Lars makes some really important points. Also, I have found that not only are some professions more competitive than others, some work places just seem to be competitive. I've worked in academia and at four different colleges, and it is amazing how much the culture changes from college to college, and even more startling, from department to department. The same can be said for high schools. Teaching biology at one school can be a totally different experience than teaching at another. So some of your jealousy issues may stem from the karma of the workplace, if that kind of statement makes any sense. Measuring yourself against others, even in a competitive situation like sports or sales, is not really a path to ultimate success. I've been in some very competitive situations, and the secret is to focus on the task, focus on doing your best, and try very hard to extinguish your negative thoughts about what might be "toxic" people in your workplace. I once worked at a place where there was a guy purposely trying to make me look bad, (even resorting to spying on me looking for issues he might bring up with management), and there were people there who wanted me OUT. But I survived. I decided that if I was going down, I was going down in a blaze of glory, my way. I did the job the way I wanted to do it, the way I knew it could be done, and I went all out to do it that way. I stopped worrying about pleasing these toxic co-workers, (and one of them was my boss) and focused on working with the enthusiastic, collaborative, positive people around me. And I was ultimately VERY successful. And this strategy has served me well over the years of my career. Workplace drama is to be avoided at all costs, focus on loving your work, not the people around you. Seek out and spend time with folks who are not toxic for you, who are like minded. I once worked with a woman who was very jealous of me and cut me down incessantly in the workplace. I was very young, this was one of my first jobs, and it really threw me for a loop at first. But then my boyfriend summed her up with these few words, "She's just jealous because you're getting some and she's not!" (He was kidding, sort of, lol!) But then I started to see her antics as just laughable and distracting, and I got back to living my life for myself, there was no pleasing her anyway, I focused on doing my job, and it all worked out in the end. Do not measure yourself by others standards, create your own!! Also, in the long run, you will find people who are very competitive with others do not get very far in the workplace. They radiate insecurity or their "me, me, me" attitude tends to get boorish after a while, and after working with them once, most folks try to avoid repeating the experience. Don't become one of those people, lol!

Doorwalls are lakefront speak for sliding doors. I don't see it as much with standard listings. I did not realize that was a Michigan thing. I found this: "A door wall is a sliding-glass door or patio door. The term is yet another example of banal Michigan vernacular, where in the residents latch on to company names, trademark names, marketing terms and product names from local companies. The terms become embedded in the local vocabulary and eventually become accepted as actual valid words and phrases. In this case the term comes from Wallside Windows in Taylor, MI (a large window manufacturer), where 'door wall' is their created word for sliding-glass door."

IMA your wedding story reminded me of a funny story. Since I was in high school I have been friends with this girl. In high school none of my friends liked her because they said she was full of herself, but she was always nice to me. So my friends put up with her because I liked her. Anyways as we went into adulthood we stayed friends. Had kids at the same time and even worked at the same place after I graduated college. Always the same thing, my new friends and work friends all disliked her. As we have gotton older she almost makes things a competition, always telling me how GREAT this or that is and how her kids are straight A students, bla bla bla. And I notice that it it always when I have a problem she throws in my face how she does not have that problem. For instance I was breaking up with a boyfriend before meeting my ex and she told me that she felt like my boyfriend always had the hots for her!!! And when I lost a bunch of weight she bragged that she was down to a size 2 (knowing darn well I am bigger than that). Fastforward to my wedding day. Her and her husband stood up in my wedding. The place we had our reception had a beautiful outdoor area for nature pictures. We took many different poses as my bridal party watched. When I got my wedding proofs back I noticed that she had the photographer take all the same poses with her and her husband!!! IT was sooo wierd. And I did not say anything, but everyone else looking through my proofs commented on it.
