You are right about clay pots. I didn't use them as much when I grew in NY because of that. But, there were certain plants that did terribly in plastic and I grew them in clay. In Florida, plastic doesn't work because the heat, humidity and too much rain during the summer months. I have moved most to clay and the plants in plastic are planted in rock. I'm embarassed to admit, my plants in clay pots, where the roots grew outside the pot and attached to the clay went into larger clay pots. When it was time to repot, I stuck the plant in the clay pot inside a larger pot. The roots were free to fill in the space. I would eventually wind up with very heavy plants where some were potted inside 2 or three clay pots. When I do move plants out of the clay pots, I soak the roots for about 1/2 hr and peel the roots off the clay. Many get broken but I always pot in Spring when new roots are just starting to grow. I don't worry about losing the older roots. They will either branch or just die off. Doesn't seem to affect the plant as long as you time it right. Jane

You are right about Florida and Phrags may as well add Zygo's, masd, dracula, some oncidiums. I do grow a hand full of Phrags and both that you mentioned. They will not take the FL some and heat. If your are lucky enough to have a wet pad problem solved. If like most Floridians we grow them more in a shady area, like a lathe house with a fan to move the air. Also most grow in pure spag and keep a saucer under them to hold water. I do not use a saucer since I water alot so my spag never dries totally. Also we do get alot a rain in the summer so if they are able to get the days of rain without drying out they will get crown rot. A covered shade house/lathe house will solve many problems.

Right now, I need a sump pump...and I live on a hill. More rain in the forecast, too. The weather pattern has changed here - normally an El Nino year means severe drought in Oklahoma. Not this season anyway. With our normally semi-dry to dry summers, I use the garden hose to water EVERY day in most areas and every other day in other areas that prefer dryer conditions. We have our own well, so I can also use the sprinkler without ill affects on my plants. It is just like rain water. The birds, butterflies, bees and amphibians love it too. When I hand water, the birds follow me from tree to tree, so I spray up into the trees and they chirp and sing for me. The occasional tortoise will come out of hiding for a long, cool drink, too. I set the mister on the tropicals and water-loving ferns etc. to keep them happy. This takes all day. I use soaker hoses under my veggies when it is very hot and very dry to prevent scorching and so the water will get down deep where the nutrients are and encourage deep roots. For under my Phlox and roses, &etc., I screw on a fan sprayer and let it run slowly, gently and deeply under them to prevent leaf-scorch, and do this as often as needed. I even water in the winter if it is a dry winter. Soil heave (freeze, thaw, freeze, thaw) is terrible here in Okie, and in dry winters this will kill plants and even small trees and shrubs. And of course, potted plants need a drink just about every day in the summer. That is how I have to do it here to keep mine alive year round. ~Annie

there is a plant propogation book i have wherein the author describes his own mist system. that author has a large black coil of hose in the roof of his greenhouse so that water can be heated before reaching the mist nozzles. that's at least one vote for using warm water and keeping the cuttings reasonably warm as they root. just thought i would toss that in! lol. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by: mosaic z8 LA (My Page) on Sun, May 11, 03 at 11:59 With such a setup you could probably root roses under mist all winter here in Louisiana. And even though I had a pressure regulator on there, I kept having a problem with the heads blowing off! (Their drippers work perfectly by the way so it's nothing against the company) I ordered foggers from Misty Mate this year and they put out a super fine fog. Perfect for propagation. They are a litte more expensive than the ones from Dripworks but worth it. And if you ask they will ship the misting heads for $1.50. I went to HD and bought a 10-24 tap and drill set (3.00) and drilled holes in my 1/2" cvpvc and the heads just screwed right in! I bought a Melnor timer at HD for $39 and it has 1 minute spray options so I've got it set for 1 minute every 10 minutes. Can't remember the model number but it's not the one on the HD website. I hope to finish my new propagation box soon. I built one on a stand this year so I can move it around easily. Wouldn't you know, HD has plastic sheeting made just for greenhouses that I used! It's not the real thick heavy stuff either. It's only 4mil and is crystal clear see-thru! Hopefully I'll be finished this week!
