First-time Gardner With Cayenne Peppers - Problems

Hi,

I'm new to growing peppers. I've grown herbs and stuff before without issues, but I'm having a few problems with my Cayenne pepper plant. I purchased it already started in a small pot and transplanted it into a bigger pot. It had some peppers starting on it when I purchased it, and I've only had it for maybe two weeks. When I purchased it, it was remarkably healthy.

A lot of the leaves turned from a deep green to a light green to a yellowish green, and now many of the leaves have fallen off. ...All in areas that buds look like they were beginning to form. As a matter of fact, the very tips of the leaves begin with a tiny touch of brown that seems to spread up the leaf. There are also a lot of little brownish blackish dots on some leaves. Most of the damage seems to have occurred in the newest areas of the plants, it's damaging my plant from top down it seems. The bottom leaves of the plant are still in decent shape, but all of the new buds have fallen off and the plant seems like it's in some sort of limbo.

We've had a problem with beetles before on other plants, so I purchased some "Organocide" and sprayed the indicated amount on the leaves. And since, I haven't noticed any bugs on any of my plants nor have I noticed any additional damage on any of my other plants.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be wrong with my pepper plant??

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for responding. It's one of those Bonnie plants, so it came in a big peatpot that you're just supposed to rip the bottom off of. The peatpot pretty much just fit right into the clay pot it's in now. So I used only a little bit of the miracle grow's "Moisture Control" soil to help it keep in place. I also did that with my other plants, and even my herbs, and everything else is thriving.

I used spray on plant food... Sort of like fertilizer I guess. I have used a bit of that organic "worm poop" spray on plant food stuff, just once, after all of this started happening. (Thinking the yellowing from the leaves was a result of maybe poor nourishment or something.)

So the only things that have touched the plant are the organic pesticide, "Organocide", water, and a couple misty sprays of that worm poop plant food stuff.

Could this be an infection of some kind? I stopped seeing bugs after I used the Organocide...

Hi tcbrocks, I agree with noinwi, the lights are too far away from the seedlings. From the photos, it looks like the lights are T12 (or maybe T8). If that's the case, lower the lights to within an inch or two from the seedlings. If the lights happen to be T5 you might not want to get them that close, the T5 bulbs get very hot (especially on the ends). Also, I really don't think one 2 foot light bulb is enough for each Jiffy tray. After you lower the lights, you'll see that the light does not cover the entire tray. Hi, I'm sorry I can't tell what you have from your photos. The pictures come up too small to see anything. Still I can tell you when you sprayed last week, you didn't get all of them. Your bottle probably tells you to spray every so many days, and that is why. It is probably going to take a few times to get them all. Make sure you spray the undersides of the leaves too. Bugs often hide there or lay eggs there. Remy

Jalapenos and Cayennes are great peppers to start with. I would suggest some Hot Hungarian Wax as well. Easy to grow, good producers and a good mild to medium heat. If you buy and start from seed, stay away from the Ebay and Amazon.com suppliers. It is a crap shoot buying from them. Many are good but many are selling any old seed and labeling it as some of the more popular varieties. you don't realize it until many months later when your Ghost pepper seeds make Bell peppers. For you first year, I would just go with what I can find at the local garden center seed racks. If you are looking to start with starter plants, you should be able to get some good deals at those same garden centers as they try to clear out the left over plants for this growing season. LOL...:) Of course your plant will produce chilis. Many pepper plants are self pollinating and alot of times only need to be brushed up against or have a little breeze to do the job. Lack of sunlight will slow things down, you will probbly never have a monster of a plant but you should not have problems otherwise. Be careful not to overwater, it is better to let a chili plant get overly dry than to overwater. I wait until I see some droop in the leaves before watering. Keeping a light on it cannot hurt and definitly let it get as much direct light as you can. good luck..:) kendra
