End of summer pics

I don't get around to posting pics much because a.) I've been busy, and b.) I'm at the mercy of my wife who downloads everything. Anyways, here are some pics of my new place and what I've been doing. I also will have a couple of more individualized posts including Randy4UT's Musa velutina's.

Basjoo with beer can for scale

First in-ground trachy being prepped for winter with recently fallen leaves

McCurtain from Alligator Alley going in the ground next spring

Med fan bought as a 1 gal from the beach 2 years ago

Waggy bought this spring, planted in 3 gallon. Almost busted open the 3 gallon pot with its roots despite the size.

Washy filifera grown from seed that germinated in the spring

Y. rostrata going in the ground next spring

3 gal needle from Alligator Alley this spring, now in a 7gal pot, going in the ground next spring

Robusta that was just putting out its first fan leaves this spring

Centennial Spirit Crepe Myrtle planted 2 weeks ago. $7 at Lowes, hope it makes it.

New bed that I'm working on. The red maple is coming down and the previous island that was there will be a raised desert bed including the Y. rostrata, cacti, maybe an agave and a Y. Gloriosa or aloifolia.

Date palm grown from seed. The date was used for cookies Christmas 2005.

My 3 year old daughter who is presenting the unheated sunroom where my potted plants will be spending the winter.

The small $70 space heater from Sam's Club which hopefully will keep my unheated sunroom warm enough to sustain all of my plants.

Hey! Whats up Bradleyo!? Long time no see. Everything looks great. Where do you live now? You were moving were'nt you? Your plants look awesome. Send me an email we'll talk. By the way thanks for getting me started with that Trachy this spring. Its doing great.It amazing how fast everything takes off once you get started.Look!

njoasis,there are at least 10 varieties of agave that can grow in zone 5,so in your area I'm sure there are several more very cool options and even the ones pictured would have a good chance(kept dry) with protection.(havardiana is another)I am growing parryi,tequila and americana which is the common blue colored agave you see in the s.w. like the one in the middle of T-heads pic, my Agave americana has grown 11 new leaves this year!probably more than any other plant,except yuccas,I am going to try a covered leaf pile(kept DRY) on my americana,you should try some of these they are very rewarding plants to grow!except maybe in the s.w.where they grow like weeds,thats where I got mine,someone was pulling their weeds.Here is a pic of the agave I will try to overwinter and a link to some other agave etc Here is a link that might be useful: Agave etc

Great pics! I really like the row of Trachys in the back, I think that's an awesome look. When they are a little bit bigger, its going to make an incredible privacy hedge! How old are the younger ones? Thanks for sharing! -Alex

Homegrown figs definitely taste better than store bought!! Everything looks great! I wish my Basjoos grew half as well as yours. Mine stayed the same height all summer long even though they did grow 10 leaves. Now Im overwintering them in the ground, and we will see what happens. I wont be too devestated if I lose them because I dont have a lot of space, and there are other plants that would happily take their space and grow better! Great ensete and Cycads! I like the calla lily a lot too. Someone around here had calla lilies in their yard and I asked them if they came back, and they said that they dont do anything and they come back well. I think I'll add some calla lilies next year too since they are very interesting plants with beautiful blooms. Thanks for sharing! -Alex

Looking good Josh, I can't believe that banana is still in its pot. It has to be busted wide open by now. I only moved 15 minutes away to Harrison City, Pa. I don't know if its even on the map. Been very busy trying to get the yard ready for winter. I planted that trachy and the bananas on July 15, thinking it be willing to sacrifice those if they don't make it from not getting established enough but we still don't have a frost in sight, knock on wood. And of course, I'm sure you all know it's been warm. Can't wait til spring to get the rest of my stuff in the ground.

Nice photos you guys.

Josh, I've told you before, I really like that valley view that you have. Question, do you dig up your banana plants or leave them in the ground? I see them planted in the ground all over in my area. They must be very hardy. How long does it take them to recover in spring?

Brad, I think that space heater should at least keep the room in the 50's. Looks like there is lots of glass though. Good for sunlight but a huge heat loss. Does the sunroom face south?

The sunroom is 100% double paned glass. It faces SW. The plants get good sun from 11am until about 5pm right now.

The previous owner claimed that it didn't freeze in there but I'm skeptical. So far it has stayed slightly warmer in there than the outside temps. Our low here so far is 38F and the sunroom got down to 43F. I'm really only looking to keep it around 45-50F throughout the winter.

Southern il boy,

I've come to learn after my visit with Boca Joe that my bananas may be Saba bananas. Ive cut them down to about 2 1/2 feet tall and dug them up. I'm going to store the psuedostems in perlite and peatmoss in large pots in my unheated storage room. Thats the best chancce they have for survival. They look alot like musa basjoo but Joe and I are just not sure. I'll be doing the same with my Dwarf Cavendish and all the pups from the larger bananas. Cross your fingers. The few palms and other plants; pineapple,succulents, crouton, cordyline(red sensation), ficus, lemon seedlings, will spend their winter in my SE living room. I also might try some shop lights for supplemental lighting. I'm sure pretty much everything will come through ok.
