Flourescents don't give the full spectrum of light that the sun does. I've had moderate success with very small seedlings, but too long under it and they get all stretched out. You can buy flourescent grow bulbs for some lights that work better. Personally I think the only lights worth while are HPS if you're actually going to grow them indoors for any amount of time. They are quite expensive though.

Stick with a windowsill, preferably south facing.

I grow under fluorescent bulbs. I am very satisfied with the plants. I grow them to the size needed to transplant (about 3 montbs). I have noticed greenhouse grown plants have thicker stems and seem to grow taller and more uniform, but after planted in the ground, mine catch up fine.

It's the amount of fluorescent light that is lacking and making the plants leggy.

Put the leggy ones in more light......

I start mine under ordinary fluorescents too-with good results. How close are your lights to the plants. The lights should be 2 or 3 inches from the tops of the plants.

thanks for all the response. They were about two or three inches away from the light, yet they all turned out very spindly and some had purplish bottoms. The ones i had kept on the sill were all a uniform green.
