At this time, they're essentially dormant, thus pesticides aren't much help. Insecticidal soap may work. And/or suck them up with a wet-dry shop vac - they'll drown in the soapay water.

Also, spend some time caulking & sealing cracks & crevices on the interior of your house. Wait until late July to do the same for the outdoor cracks & crevices.

I hear you, Ms Minnamouse! I see you're in MD, and I'm not far away in coastal NJ and they're getting awful here ... certainly not dormant in this part of the country. I have a high tolerance for insects and other creepy crawly things, but this is getting to me.

Unfortunately I know of no pesticide labeled for use on these insects, and no repellents, either. Fire might just be the way to go ;-)

Seriously, though, do the best you can to seal the house (and don't forget your garage, car, and any storage buildings you have). These insects are very mobile, not only moving about under their own power but are great hitchhikers, so making a dent in their numbers outdoors is probably more than you can accomplish alone.

Jean, I am almost certain that insecticidal soap will not work because I even tried hornet and wasp spray (the one that kills on contact) and it did nothing. That stuff is much stronger than insecticidal soap!

I don't think I can vacuum them because I doubt my dad will let me use any of his shop vacs for that and also, it will make the house stink like stinkbugs whenever I use the shop vac in the house from then on, even after emptying it. I read an article where vacuuming them was mentioned and it wasn't suggested for that very reason.

Agardenstateofmind, my killing every one of them I can get to outside may not make much of a dent but it does make me feel better! Too bad people won't organize a stinkbug killing program and maybe we'd be less one invasive pest.

Maybe I can try using a grill lighter to kill them in a safe and controlled way. It isn't "nice" but I care more about my native species and environment than I do for this alien species.

I just noted that the article says that they don't bite humans. That's not true. They can and do bite with their long and sharp mouth part that they use for piercing produce.

I have an idea but need a few days to find something and will report if it works.

Most shop vacs are made for wet-dry applications, use it for wet. Take the paper filter out and put a few inches water in it, add a little soap. To clean the hose of any potential odors, fill a bucket of soapy water, maybe even a few drops of bleach, plunge the business end into the bucket. Empty the reservoir and hang the hose overnight to dry.

Trust me, they work for water too. I've filled and emptied mine several consecutive times during a rainy winter deluge in the one corner of my basement I cannot guarantee against leaking :)
