what to do with metallica

All,

I received a poorly rooted metallica cutting about 2 weeks ago with an inflo on it. The cutting had two sad looking roots but a beautiful inflo that is now blooming. I think more energy is going on the inflo than the roots. It is killing me but I think I need to cut off the inflo. Thoughts?

I'm the wrong one to answer because I also have an inflo that I feel needs to be whacked, but.... I'm taking a chance for now.

Just my thoughts, considering how hard it is to cut, but since you already have had roots form, even if only two, I would be tempted to make a wait and see game of it. However, Metallica is expensive, huh?

Yep me too! I'm not one to cut either. I would sacrifice the future for now so I can enjoy the flowers. I don't know if I have the mental fortitude to cut it off! :(

Mona, my rooted one was $120 plus shipping so that's my most expensive plant so far. She's finally waking up! My baby is barely 9 months old. I'm just glad she made it through our first winter together. Although I really babied her and she got to stay inside the house. So I'm not sure when she will bloom for me.

It's to go in a long but narrow/shallow trough, and it's an unheated glass walkway. I'm in southern England, so even though it's a corridor from one bit of a building to another, it'll get down close to freezing. My Dutch plant guru suggested something Mediterranean like Olive or Citrus but most of those kinds of things are bug magnets. If it was my own job to look after I'd probably go Yuccas, but my staff have a tendency to let things get too big. Yuccas are pretty easy to keep to size if you want to.

Okay, I'm back. Sorry, I got sidetracked (well, that used to be my middle name...now it's "Hectic"!). Before I get too far...your plant is GORGEOUS! (Not 'Fred Ives') I said I'd be back to explain there are 2 metallicas. Here goes: In my Echeveria Cultivars book by Schulz and Kapitany, it tells of E. gibbiflora 'Metallica' ~described as purple/grey & a form of the species. It also lists another E. 'Metallica', described as a hybrid of gibbiflora & often mistaken for the other one above. So...you see my confusion? There are no pix in the book of either of these two. But there are pix of E. 'Perle von Nurnberg', which is described as growing to 6 inches (150 mm). It has E. gibbiflora 'Metallica' as one of 'PvN's parent plants. In 2008, I bought 2 (large rosettes-more than 6 in wide) plants like yours that were tagged as E. metallica. I doubted it at the time, as I never see these sold in the trade. I tried researching it at the time, but never figured out definitively, as I just confused myself more (easy to do these days). :P Click for larger, mine in bud & in bloom: I had Echeveria 'Perle von Nurnberg' as well, but they were always much smaller. So, I thought they must be E. metallica. Then, I found others who had very large 'PvN'. So caused me to doubt again. One site, crassulaceae.net, seems fairly accurate in identifications. They have extensive files on many plants. Margrit B. & Jean-Michel M. there, have photos of E. 'Metallica'. From those pix, I'd say your plant is not 'Metallica' they have shown. See link below. But under different growing conditions, plants can take on different looks. Guess we need to keep comparing through the year. But...your plant could be the "other" 'Metallica'! I usually get rid of all the dirt when a plant comes in to my house. You do not know what is harboring in it. The mealies will be found hiding in the roots up by the base. I take the dirt off. Dip my plants in a pesticide , dawn soap , whatever. and then pot up in the dirt of my choice ( Nice fast draining gritty one) after a few days so the roots can callous over. Your question about healthy or non healthy roots will be more evident at that time after a thorough investigation.. Beautiful Echeveria metalica, both of you..

I'm not complaining about the kitchen when the views are like that (on a sunny day, that is.... or at least the morning). The views from the bath is incredible, with the way the windows wrap around the sinks. Noted a very savvy super-realtor has three listings worth 45M+ on the same street!

I got a Dazzler a month ago with the same problem. Just could not bring myself to cut the inflo.. It was worse as it was a diagonal cut cutting and only had roots on the one side.

It seems to be doing fine and I have enjoyed the blooms. It's a hard call.

I would send an email to the seller and let them know and/or ask them what they suggest. I suspect it cost big bucks so hopefully they will stand by their product.

Fabianman,

If your Metallica even had 2 roots on it there shouldnt be an issue. I'd leave the inflo on and put the plant in a warm bright area. Give it ST and water when u do water, if you have SNG then Id apply that also....BUT DO NOT FERTILIZE with liquid or granular fertilizer, especially as potting soils usually have fertilizer in it.

Give it couple of weeks, if you see wrinkling then you may want to worry. Usually a new plant goes through a bit of stress or shock from the shipping and new environment. So your Metallica may just need a bit of time, but leave the inflo if you like for now. If you do cut it off the plant will divert the energy to roots and leaves.

I actually have noticed some wrinkling of the cutting over the past two days. I am going to watch it for now. At least enjoy some more of the blooms and likely cut off the inflo. I care more about the plant Han the inflo.

I agree. Do not cut and watch for wrinkles. That will be the best tell if the inflo is taking too much energy/resources.

A.though there are wrinkles the stem is quite firm.

If its firm I would def leave the inflo, especially seeing how gorgeous your flowers look in Ohio..

I too am in the same dilemma only mine doesn't have roots yet.
So we watch and try and decide.
