ID? orange-yellow segmented worm-like insect

I've been finding a lot of these in my garden soil and compost pile. They're 2-3 inches long, about as thick as a pencil lead, light-orange, but darker on the ends. They appear to be worms at first glance, but they have a hard shiny skin and tiny legs at one end.

I assume they're a larva of something and probably pretty common, but I haven't been able to find anything about them online.

Anyone know?
