I have two sides going so far--lots of seedlings going in the areas that look bare. side 1 (this was the 1st side I did back in March): And this is side 2 (I had a bunch of herbs and potatoes but decided to go above ground with those (I just threw together the wood planters from scraps we had laying around-now ISO soil): I have corn, greens, beans, and a few other sprouts coming up--I threw the straw down (from when I cleared our side yard in May) to give them a bit of shade and extra water---this side gets like 6 hours of INTENSE sun this time of year (especially this year). I have some raspberries to plant in the back corner on side 2--I'd love to have a little berry patch. But through research I've found very few varieties grow in a 10a zone (this part is all new to me) Those retaining wall planters are my next big project but the dirt is so compacted I can't even dig---but I'm thinking of just top filling it after I pull everything...just can bring myself to get rid of all my aloe and succulents that grow up in the shade. I'd love to do something vertical... (Side 1) (Side 2) This is the first year I'm doing this---I pulled the existing shrubs (2 10 year old hibiscus, a 10 year old rosemary, among others) all by hand and turned the soil myself---my husband's around to help but it's mostly a project I've taken on myself. I'd like to get a bit more organized as far as what grows where and when, more vertical growth, etc...one thing at a time I suppose. I've shown you mine--who's showing theirs? I used to garden in redwood raised bed boxes until the redwoods growing in my yard took them back. Boxes toward the front of the picture, redwoods in the background. This one gives a better sense of how big they are, which I'm told is how far the roots go. I gave up fighting with the roots. The planters are "sub-irrigation" or "self-catering planters", mostly Earthboxes, but at least one of them seems to have more space for water than soil. I "smuggled" some garlic from France last year, and put them in one of these last October, and most of the roots are directly in the water. I don't have any real hydroponic set ups though. PS I actually brought the garlic back peeled so it was legal.it is sending up scales as we speak! Non edible PSS I notice the original roll call thread is open again. I'm in the north of Australia. Never seen these sold in nurseries here but often seen growing around the place. I have a few but don't know whether they were deliberately planted before I bought the place or brought in by birds. The names I listed came from a weed list but commonly they called Tropical Oleander or Yellow Oleander locally. This thread was the first where I heard about their toxicity but down south Nerium oleander was commonly talked about as being toxic. That article is interesting Floral, but it is a study based on attempted suicide rather than accidental ingestion. Curious how if you take it in the evening the chance of death is over 50% lower than if you take it in the morning. I'm not curious enough to check it out for myself though, LOL. MattK, there are for sure a lot of poisonous garden plants around and a lot of people don't realise it.

Hi Andrew nice to hear from a fellow gardener from Ottawa . Andrew the greenhouse was from a supplier from British Columbia we did choose to have a double door . Andrew there are a few places that carry citrus on occasion 2 places in Gatineau across the river Emery and Botanix then in Ottawa Rona usually carry citrus and Richmond nursery normally have them . Alot of times in the spring the large hardware stores with garden center's have citrus . Andrew just be careful citrus collecting is very addictive lol , see what i mean my bursting greenhouse. my lychee finally has fruit growing All the tree's really need to come out for a wash I am hoping that the weather will break soon .
