Pritchardia pacifica - Fiji Island Fan Palm

Three double trunk palms on the north and northwest side of the garden. In the ground from 5 to 7 years from 15 gallon cans. The pair in the foreground are the newest (5 yrs) and you can just see the tip of the older one behind it. The Spindle Palm to its left has six feet of grey wood for comparison.

Beccariophoenix madagascariensis - Window Palm

In the center of the garden, shade, damp, this came out of a 7 gallon can at three feet high two years ago. The large frond in the center is 9 feet to the tip.

Dypsis lastelliana - Teddy Bear Palm

There are three in the garden. This one and a second, eight or nine feet away, went in the ground after the 2005 hurricanes from 7 gallon cans at around eight foot tall. They're both over 15' with a nice display of green/gray wood. Here's a shot right after an old boot fell off. The other one is on the opposite side of the house. It has over 6' of gray wood and was planted as a seedling seven years ago.

Chamaerops humilis - European Fan Palm

An original plant in the garden - 9 years in the ground - through three major hurricanes with no damage. This was either a three gallon or seven and it's over 8' tall. I can't remember the name of the spiny palm to its left. That just went in the ground last spring from Searle Bros. Good playground plant.

Bismarckia nobilis - Bismarck Palm

The first picture, from underneath, is from another original plant in the garden - 9 years in the ground - through three major hurricanes and got tore up bad in each. This was from a 15 gallon can, planted out at 6' and it's now over 18' tall.

The second shot is a rare "Half Moon" Bismarck. Notice how the segments never complete all the way around. This went in the ground around 6 years ago, and like the one above, has survived the worst of the weather. It's around 15' tall.

Licuala spinosa - Licuala Palm

Three clusters (two in this shot) all original garden from 3 gallon cans. On the east side of the garden in a protected alley. Of course that protection failed in Wilma and they all were ripped up pretty bad.

Hyophorbe Verschaffeltii - Spindle Palm and Hyophorbe lagenicaulis - Bottle Palm

These three were all marked "Spindle Palm" at the HD when I bought them 8 years ago. They line the east side of the driveway.

Ann, you are going to love Nell Dean. I have had her several years and she still stuns me! I posted SDC for you so you could see a multiple bloom. She is lovely... Rita, Laura Harwood would be lovely in your beds. I know you can't tell in the photo's but she has a very large bloom. The contrast with the eye is a stunner in the garden..WC has been blooming for some time now and I don't know where I put the other pics. Chris, they are doing excellent. I hope the Alabama exports fare as well. I will be waiting for the photos.. njmomma, I am pleased you are enjoying them.. Jane, Play Misty for Me has been a hard one to get a photo of. My fault because she opens late and I take the pictures early in the morning while I groom the plants. She is supposed to have a wire edge but it is barely there. I love the colors on ER.. Westelle - please do! There is a "join this site" in the left navigation bar on the blog to make it easy for people to follow the blog and get notified of new articles. Flora - Thank you so much! I have done some social media work and writing as part of my last couple of jobs but it was small side work compared to the main focus of the job - IT support, websites, graphic design. Perhaps I will keep an eye open for such work as where I was working fell on hard times and laid off all the staff just before Christmas. Where one door closes another will surely open! I'm bumping this up, partly due to the spammer we want moved down....but hopefully more of our gang will see this and check out that lady's great pix. After I browsed her site, I saw she has a LOT more table setting albums on there! There are so many wonderful ideas and lovely things. I'm going to be spending a lot of time trying to see all her stuff, which is a good thing in my case. (I have been up all night, again. Thank heavens for the computer!! This is the time of year I'll (hopefully) be adding a lot to the Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas albums. Of course many pictures come from you guys, but in my late night browsing I try to find new stuff for us too. Earlier today I got notice from BHG on some new stuff, and added a couple of their ideas. Halloween pumpkin setting in black and white! Really neat I thought. And then a black and orange painted pumpkin in the Fall album I thought was pretty. All of your palms look great, but that bismarck is amazing. It must be quite the sight in person. I'm jealous of your collection. I assume you're in southern Florida?

islandbreeze - Yep. Boca Raton, Palm Beach County. We have almost 60 palms in the ground, 27 unique species.

Very nice collection. What are the coldest temps those have seen in-ground? I know they wouldn't look so good after a frost.

We don't get frost in our zone. We've had temps as low as 40, but only overnight and for one night.

Very nice, just like you said you have some very unique and interesting palms. Do you use the same fertilizer on all of them or does it vary, and do you have any favorite (fertilizer) that you prefer over others? Thanks.

downeast - I use 12-6-8 with minors (also called 'Florida Palm Special') for the entire garden. One 50lb bag, once or twice a year depending on the rain. The entire property is just over 1/4 acre including the house and driveway.

G'day fawnridge, love your collection. I am a palm collector as well. I have most of those except the Fijian Fan Palm and that "Half Moon" Bismark. Do you know the actual botanical name for the "Half Moon", so I can order it please?

The only nursery growing them is off Southern Boulevard in Palm Beach County. Sorry, but it's been around 6 years and I don't remember the name. If it ever throws seeds, I'll be more than happy to pass them around.

fawnridge, a bit hard for me to get seeds, or go to the nursery as I live in Australia. I just googled Bismarck Palm Half Moon and the only thing that come up about palms was this thread!! Is there any way to find the botanical name, as I am now obsessed with this plant!!

Ed - When (and if) they seed, I'll send you some. I went looking in the Plantfinder (wholesale guide) and I think the nursery is out of business. I spent 7 years in the Landscape Design trade and never saw another one like this except in his nursery.

It's one of the first.

That was my first trip to the Los Angeles / Oceanside area, and I wish I had much more than just the two days. I could have spent a week photographing palm trees and other trees.

I'm going to find time to go back down there in the next couple of years.

Really enjoyed the lush beautiful palm photos here. The teddy bear palm has an interesting trunk! How did the Teddy Bear Palm get its name I wonder-anyone know?
Spectacular half moon Bismark. I love the spindle palms best though :P

SJN - You've obviously never been up close and personal with a Teddy Bear Palm. The crown shaft is covered in a reddish-brown fur just like a stuffed bear.
