cutting rotted stem and re-rooting

Hey All.

Well unfortunately my plumie, the first I've ever had ANY success with in about 4 tries, bought the farm. It branched and flowered in its first year, started to leaf out nicely this spring, then BAM, dropped all her leaves followed by a rotting stem. So just today I cut the stem back until I got to a white center, leaving me a chunk that's about 2 1/2 inches long. Is that too small to try to re-root?

For replanting I have Miracle Grow cactus soil and rootone. Both of those worked initially for this plant.

Any thoughts are welcome. BTW, I believe I'm supposed to let the cutting dry before trying to root it. Correct?

Thanks for all your help!

Bruce
