Know any tall Plumerias?

Another newbie here. I am trying to pick out a plumeria but can't find any information about height or growth pattern, other than a generic instruction that all plumerias "will grow 5'-10' feet". My local nursery is no help. They have hundreds of plumerias and zero knowledge about how tall or bushy/compact they will get. Do some get taller or bushier than others? I'm looking for tall and fragrant. Where do I find this info?

If you are looking for tall and fragrant, I would suggest Aztec Gold or any of the Moragne varieties. Plumeria are capable of growing to 40-50 feet in ideal environments like the tropics.

You are in an area where they will grow amazingly well throughout the late Spring, Summer, and part of Autumn, but they cannot survive a freeze, so you will need to either keep them in pots, or put them in ground, but uproot before frost or freeze. If the pot is large enough you can probably expect between 1 to 2 feet of growth a year on the above varieties, but it's unlikely they will ever reach their full potential in your lifetime.

I have a 4 year old Aztec Gold that is 6 1/2 feet tall with an equal spread.

In Texas I have only seen them get about 15 feet. My grandmother had one reach about 13 feet in ground.

hot north wind and that`s about it, we probably won`t even get rain. Uh, Barb, Ike came off the coast of Africa, so did the 1900 storm, Carla.... Alicia was a cold front that went through on Monday and was a cat 3 hitting us on Friday of the same week. It is true that you can not predict Gulf hurricanes, the hurricane forcast is ONLY for Atlantic storm, we breed our own in the Gulf and no way to predict them. I still didn`t go buy plywood, storing it is a pain in the you know what. We have no garage. Wouldn`t board up for a cat 1 or 2 storm anyway. Rain is the problem with this storm, it is stalled and just dumping rain on them. It would flood no matter where the storm was, no place can handle that amount of rain in that short of a period of time. got a generator, I took it when we evacuated for Ike,mom left hers here and it flooded. I store it at my bros house and he checks it for me on a regular basis, which means he uses it lol! He`s a carpenter which is very handy. Ike wasn`t too bad on us, minor roof damage, garden ruined. BUT the dang roofers set the house on fire and then ran off. Got off work and owned the clothes I had on and nothing else. Not enough insurance. House is almost totally done, just some minor stuff here and there, and the outside, ugh, need a big chunk o change to fix it, like $50,000+, hopefully the city will come through with a grant. I decided even if Issac headed this way I was not going to do anything, just went and bought a truck full of plumeria, if I can get into photobucket I will get pics posted. Cuttings came in the mail yesterday from Aloha plumeria so I will plant those tomorrow on my day off. Got most of the other plumeria planted in the yard. Tally HO!

LT, I am south of you in San Antonio. just clean up the break as best as you can. Once the cleaned up break dries out you can seal it with pruning tar or Dap caulk. If you can leave a few inches of branch there's a good chance it will regrow from the branch. if you cut it flush with the joint then it will never regrow from the joint. A 15 year old plant should be just fine to prune at any time. I like to prune in March mostly because its the easiest time to root the cut branches. The first thing to do with the broken branch is remove all of the leaves, then clean the break and dip it in rooting hormone. you can let it air dry or use a humidity chamber for about 2 weeks. At that point you could start the rooting process. I like using perlite or a mix of perlite and soil 3 to1 and bottom heat from a heat mat. Chances are pretty good with branch of that size it will root for you. Good luck with it.

I got my plumerias from a lot of different ebay sellers but the 2 that come to mind are rollmisty aka Two Willes Nursery (only have plumeria sometimes) and californiahoya aka Jungle jacks plumeria (there plumerias are expensive, but they are worth the price). I didnt get cuttings from them and all the sellers that I got cuttings from gave me cuttings that never rooted. I have terrible luck with cuttings. I have 7 plumerias right now, one is about 7 feet tall, three are around 4 feet tall, one is 2 or 3 feet tall (its a dwarf so they dont get very tall) and 2 more still are seedlings (one actually is a cutting because I had to cut the plant after it rotted and I did manage to get that one to root for me!). If you are going to buy cuttings, I would wait until late spring because then you can keep them outside where they will have enough heat to get them rooted. Early spring is a really good time to buy plumerias that are rooted because they would only be inside for a few weeks and then have the entire summer to grow. Good luck!! -Alex

Okay, let me just start by saying that I'm not an expert on identifying plumerias, but I did a search on GW website and it looks to me like a Jeannie Moragne. There are other members with more knowledge like Bill aka "tdogdad", but if you do a search on this website just type in Jeannie Moragne and you'll see an image that it looks very similar to your picture. Hope this helps :-)

what variety is the one in the pot in the second photo (6-year potted plant)? It seems so compact and has so many branches. Do you root-prune it each year? How do you keep it in such a small pot? Thanks in advance. ~dave

Hi Tony,
you have an aztec gold that size, would love to see your plants. You have never shown pictures, love to see them. I didn't realize your plants were that large.. pictures please!!!!

I have a last year aztec gold that put out 4 leaves, next set started 4 leaves and the bottom 4 leaves died. Well that one made the freeze, in a can. Is in the ground. Got the 4 leaves. ha. Will see what happens. Want it to make it. Now all my plants have finally leafed out. I am fastinated by the leaves growing and the width coming. this is new to me.
