Has anyone grown Brown Velvet?
Comments (9)Yes Susan, that's what BV will look like in cooler weather. It will vary tremendously, just as Honey Dijon and Cinco will. In high heat, HD is rather pink and faded looking. Cinco is very pretty first open, but wait until you see it on a hot day, several days after opening. Rather odd looking and I LOVE Tom Carruth roses. Today, we're very lucky to have the "improved" versions of some of these. Odd colors are primarily (and have been) selected for the novel flower color. None of these shades would be successful in Nature as none of them would attract pollinators. My feeling has always been Nature doesn't waste good genes on things which wouldn't succeed by themselves, so there is always something to put up with when selecting a novelty. If you really look at it, the most vigorous, healthy, productive roses are nearly always pink. Most species ARE pink, or some shade thereof. Move too far away from those shades and plant quality really begins to suffer. So, though I LOVE the odd shades (always have, can you tell?), I'm not growing many in my new climate as they tend to have more foliage issues and I can't/won't spray. Try to stick with the newer ones and you'll very likely have fewer problems. There really HAS been improvement. Each decade, the bar is raised for health, vigor, bloom production, etc. They may be small steps, but generally, things HAVE improved with time. Kim...See MoreHas anyone grown viticella viticella?
Comments (12)I grew a couple of species viticella plants from seed. They are only 3 years old so I am unsure how big they will get or how long they will bloom. Both of them bloomed this year. One had nodding dark blue bells and the other one had a white midrib on it's sepals. I thought they were both very cute and nice plants. They grew about 8' tall and bloomed for 3-4 weeks in July for me. If you have an 8' flower bed I would plant both the viticella and the Betty Corning. The viticella has a dark bell and the Betty has a light blue bell so the colors would look very nice together. I think you will like both of them. My BC is 4 years old now and is such a good bloomer, I really like it. This is the only picture I took of the viticella with the light colored midribs. It is not a very good picture and the sepals are actually darker than the photo shows. Karen Here's Betty...See MoreWhat Bell Pepper have you grown suscessfully?
Comments (21)Update on my first post. I contacted Bonnie and stated that their pepper that I grew from six-pack seedlings rapidly grew to four foot plants and gave me good production from fall right through the next summer. They stated that this was more likely the Big Bertha pepper, and I noted that the UF website lists Big Bertha as a good pepper for production in Florida. Any one else have experience with this one? Regardless, I'm ordering some Marconi, Lino Lamuyo, Carmen and Corno de Toro (Bullhorn) seeds so if anyone else would like to try these drop me a line and once I have the seeds I'll send them on....See MoreI.D please anyone?, grown from seed
Comments (3)Hi I love your hibiscus. I have a couple of hardy ones in my yard but they are rather dissapointing because we have a short season here in the Seattle area. How long did it take yours to go from seed to flower? Is it difficult to grow from seed? Where to get seed? Lots of questions. Thanks a lot...See Moreredshirtcat
